Tip set-up

Hi, I've got reasonable history welding at work, but never been much more than the monkey that pulls the trigger. I bought my first proper machine for home use 4 or 5 months ago, a Snap-on Promig 200, it was bought privately and came with a 36 torch. I'm considering getting a 25 as I think that's what it should have, but also wondered about a 15, with the understanding that I might then need to refit the 36 for heavy stuff.
Anyway the question was have I got the wrong tip in the 36, the tip is recessed about 1/2" into the shroud? Is this wrong or was it set up like this for a particular task. I've been using it like this so far, it works but I think it could be better.
I've just had a look in the weldequip shop, they don't list a 0.8 tip for a 36 torch, do they not exist, has this undersize tip been fitted so as to run 0.8 wire?

i run my tips flush with the shroud. I use a 15 torch which is good for 150 amps. Only ever seen 36 torches running atleast 1mm wire on industrial units. A 25 torch will cope with everything your mig has to give

X2 for the 15 torch. Will quite comfortably do the majority of hobby type welding,And they are smaller and I find easier to use.

Thanks guys, I do occasionally turn the welder up high to weld 6mm plate and the like, and I think a 25 torch I what I was used to in work, so I will probably get one of those at some point. I like that they feel a bit sturdier than a 15.
I thought I was on to the reason for the recessed tip, but turns out the tips for a 36 are only 3mm longer than those for a 15 , would still leave the tip recessed 10 mm.

In your picture above do you not have the wrong shroud on that torch. The grooves in the torch normally have a spring in them as a shroud retainer, and the shroud goes over them, whereas your shroud stops half an inch short and has it's own springing arrangement. Given the correct shroud your tip would be in the right place!

That's an MB 36, in the picture, they don't use a retaining spring, only the MB15 and MB25 have springs, all that torch needs is a new tip adaptor, gas diffuser, and a .8 contact tip, very common parts and all will be available from a local welding supplies company, the contact tip will then be set back about 3 to 4mm inside the end of the shroud and is normal for that torch.

So that wasn't as illuminating as I'd hoped, nothing he had there was really right for it, reckons I'd have to get on to Lincoln for the correct bits. I forgot to mention it was a Lincoln torch. For now he sold me a bigger contact tip, still for 0.8 wire, and we decided it was easiest to cut a bit off the back of the shroud.

I have a snap on 160 that came with an oversized torch,
Chopped a little off the nozzle so the tip is flush with it and seems to be working a little better then before when it was way back in there.

I was looking more at the torch body than the shroud, looks like its just a lead and a trigger

Looks similar to the old Murex torches?.

didn't know they made them like that, only really ever seen hobby or the usual euro type mb15 etc
