Trouble is though Wozz, if a user gets used to relying on excessive third party applications for security, it adds extra levels to the chain that just invites vulnerabilities and seeks to establish bad habits. The more complicated a system becomes, the more fragile (easier to hack) it is & the harder it is to fix.

As PCW rightly suggested, there's invariably a catch to 3d party apps. Although, being free (of cost) isn't always a bad thing.

That's something, I think, that came from, and is still promoted mainly by, Microsofts camp; antivirus, spybot, registry checkers, etc.

I don't get the option of what addresses "they" want me to see, my system will only display the legit one. Of course, sever side is a whole different kettle...

Koba, I haven't used Mailwasher, but if its anything like Mail magic Monitor I use, its a standalone program, and very small at that. It polls my ISP for mail, I can setup the usual stuff but dont bother these days, any mail looking sus' can can open in txt and then decide whether to download it to express.

Ive not have a single bit of spam or virus on a PC for 15yrs, using this simple prog

Never had any phone calls... i have a policy, if i want something, i will ring them.

Spam emails, makes me laugh when i get ones from Halifax and HSBC (mostly) dont bank with either of them.

Ebay and PP ones, youd have a message on ebay too if it were genuine.

Not sure why, but all of a sudden i am getting lots of spam on my work email account. This never happened before.

A new one on me... I have had a string of emails over the last few days from a guy who has turned up at my local airport with a consignment of 2 million US dollars, all for me. Good type that he is he has been trying to phone to let me know he is there but as I haven't answered he has attached a convenient email form so that I can supply him with the personal details he needs lest I am some sort of crook who might want to rip him off. Nearest airfield is Popham, Hampshire - more microlight than major international; do you think I should pop along and see if he is still hanging about?

google your email address - if it's on the web then you will get spam

Its a business email address, so it is all over the web, as it always has been.
Never used to get any spam.

Just had a nice Indian lady phone to tell me I had a virus on my PC, managed to waste 4 minutes of her time before telling her I had Linux so she hung up!

yea then she phoned me !

i got her going round and round for 20min before i told her i had Linux - i couldnt have because her records showed....then she gave me a mouthfull of abuse about wasting her time

it must be worth the hastle to have an operator wasting that much time on a call!
top tips

1-take ages to find your computer go to other room etc
2 -tell them it takes ages to boot as its been slow
3 -tell them the windows key is broken/disabled
5 -get them to go through the start/run programme
6 -have someone come to the door
7 -have a crash
8 -start again
9 -ask for their details as they could be scammers( aparently she was from a little known part of microsoft trying to sort problems-website an all)
10-at all times act deaf spell everything out in some random phoenetic alphabet/mockney rhyming slang-finally hang up when your bored or tell them your running Linux

just rang BC & they didnt know about it, told me to ring the fraud line on monday (fraud only work 9-5 mon-fri)

A quick Google doesn't show up any warnings so if they've used your correct surname then it's probably genuine and a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.
You're right to view anything like that with suspicion though.

That's not to say it wouldn't normally be a scam. I never respond to any emails my bank sends me. They shouldn't be sending me emails if they want to contact me - they need to use the postal system for that.

I don't respond to all the emails people pretending to be other banks send me either. Must get a couple every week from some bank I don't actually bank with asking me to confirm details or click on links.

Most 'phishing' emails will address you by your email address as that's all they have on you. Unlikely (though not impossible) that a scammer would have both your surname and email address.

same here i reply to nowt . even if banks ring me up unless its my local manager i dont acept and tell em to put it in writing
