Tin Sheds

Hi,
I’m looking for recommendations for a shed.
Ideally, I would have done a Siberian Larch self build, but, the price of timber is totally rediculous.
So, I am thinking of getting a semi-temporary tin shed for storage.
I see folk complain of condensation in tin sheds, so that would be quite unhealthy for my car parts.
Are there any well made steel sheds about, I live in a very windy area.

Iv'e had a tin shed and as with all sheds keeping the moisture out in the first place makes the biggest improvement. Mine was built on a concrete slab with about a 3" lip on the outside and water ran under the bottom when it rained, even once sealed up moisture from the floor around the edge was an issue. my new sheds are all timber, overhand the concrete blocks they are built on by at least 2" with a drainage channel all round, no issues since.

If you do buy a tin shed, maybe consider that just the outer layer and build an inner out of 50x25 roof battens and damp proof membrane, you could also build it on a timber base on concrete blocks with the walls overhanging into a drainage channel and not use the supplied bottom rails.

Any modern tin sheds I've seen have been wafer thin metal, & not exactly robust construction.

This is my garage come workshop. Its galvanised steel box section frame and sheeted with steel. The roof has a membrane to stop condensation drips. In the coldest of weather you do get a little condensation but only on the clear skylights. There is good ventilation at the eaves and the apex. It's on a 6 inch concrete base with dpm under it. The walls have a profile that sit down over the edge of the base to prevent water ingress. It is cold in winter and warm in summer but other than that I'm very pleased with it. It cost a fraction of the cost of a traditional build.

I have built a few tin sheds and wouldnt hesitate now in spending the extra on pre-insulated box profile sheets. It's so much grief and expense adding insulation/internal skin after the event, makes the insulated sheets look like exceptional value for money.

The original post says semi temporary shed for car part storage I'm guessing its more 10x6 foot than 10x6 yards..

Smaller sheds almost always seam to be damper I thinks its about more floor, wall and roof area compared to the internal volume, warm up and cool down faster too.

getting a bit of space to build a shed that size envy.

Most of the metal sheds don't have a floor. I wonder if cheap corrugated plastic sheets could be stuck, using double sided tape, to a metal shed to alleviate condensation ?

I have a workshop, what I need is a place to store parts in the parts renovation queue.
I agree, these tin sheds look so flimsy which is making it so difficult to make a decision.

you would need z purlins if you wanted to do the above and insulate the building

Same here and might be the same sort, I got it a fair while back, maybe 10 years plus and there is zero rust to the galv finish in or out, it was a bit shonky fitting together but air flow is good and little effects to the elements inside. Materials / finish could have been better then but I would buy another, about 3 foot d x 8w x 5 1/2 H, got 2 big Voodoos and racking at one end and a load of carp at the other in it.

Reckon if I didn't have the bikes I would get 4 sets of cheapo big dug racks in there and walk in space. Bu no idea how much storage the OP needs

Hello, I've just built a Yardmaster 6' x 8' shed on a concrete slab. It is flimsy when you are building it, once the roof is on it stiffens up considerably. It is meant to be built with about 500 self tapping screws. The steel is galvanised and much thinner than a baked bean can. Because it was so thin, I didn't fancy self tappers and instead used nearly 600 pop rivets. I bought a cheapo pneumatic riveter. I added extra rivets where I thought necessary. Underneath the frame I used closed cell foam strip between the steel and the concrete.
It leaked. water came in around the edge of the floor.
I siliconed around the inside and used sticky flashband around the outside. That has stopped that leak.
I siliconed around all the joins inside. Next step will be expanding foam at the eaves.
It was £300. My neighbour bought a wooden shed 12' x 6'. It cost £1200. It is carp.
I'm using mine to store various old bits from my Citroen DS build. I can't throw them away yet but I can't move in the garage if they stay there, hence the cheapo shed.

a DPM under the base n 150x50 box for the frame n roof section...
def insulated panels wall n roof 40mm thick min.....
if 4 m i'sh wide the roof panels will need 1 support in the middle....depending on legnth if u need a z purlin...plus an extra cross beam.....

I built my small metal shed with pop rivets - substantially improved rigidity. It's just placed on the patio and used to store lawn mowers, cultivator and other garden tools

To be fair to the yardmaster, when I took it down after 9 years there wasn't any significant rust.

But yeah, condensation and water leaking underneath was terrible. Also doors were flimsy as hell.
