Evening guys.
These timeken taper roller bearings are for my empire lathe headstock. Had the joyfully task of cleaning them that took ages. But out of interest are the centres on these bearings removable .

I'd suspect not, well....maybe with a suitable drift and a BFH.

The similar sized defender/discovery 1 wheel bearings are only £6.99 each before you get too involved in servicing them. I do appreciate other sizes may cost more

Wouldn't chance it.
You would probably need to deform the race to get the rollers out.

Even if this the bearings are the same size, the Timken bearings will probably be a higher spec for a lathe head-stock, you might be surprised at how expensive the original bearings could be.

As Dcal says, you need to deform the cage. I have done it in the past but it's not recommended.

I have seen "new" old stock for a Harrison L5 go for £100 but i do know they are much more expensive than this price

I'm guessing that a land rover bearing doesn't have the sort of precision that a Timken headstock bearing has.
Or any precision.

The cheap Landy ones are usually just that, cheap.

But, it’s often possible to buy good quality bearings for Landys for significantly less than the same size bearings cost when you buy them by size from a regular bearing supplier.
Huge numbers are involved when Landies are involved hence the price can be very low.

Lathe headstock bearings will never be in as much demand so people won’t be buying huge quantities at low prices.

You're not going to get lathe class clearances on a landy wheel bearing.

Lathe spindle bearings would be abec precision bearings. I did the spindle bearings in the mill a while ago, bearings the correct size were available for a tenner each, but they are normal everyday bearings like the ones you would buy for a wheel bearing, the abec 7 ones i bought were nearly a hundred quid each. To buy them off the machine supplier, would have doubled the price again.

Alpha bearings in dudley might be able to recondition the bearings you have, possibly, but the cost would be not far off buying new ones.

Had the same, 1986/1922B Timkens - "they're obsolete, we could make you a minimum batch of 500 for... oh, about £500 each"

I ended up making "top hat" bushings and dropping in "affordable" bearings, they're only in the QCGB... Over-built, Holbrooks.

I rebuilt a LR series 2 gearbox and tried to source the imperial bearings locally. The same size and clearance in a quality bearing (which as far as I see it equals the same bearing) was a lot more locally, my supplier has to pay far more for them than I could buy them as LR parts.

Agreed, I’m sure you can buy a bearing for a car far cheaper as a “car part” rather than as a one off from a bearing supplier.
But a bearing designed for a rough life in a wheel hub albeit a bearing of exactly the same overall diemensoins is not the same as a specialist high precision lathe headstock bearing.

As far as I know it’s down to the tolerance/clearance. Something like a LR gearbox has a very slack bearing (c3 I think) whereas a lathe headstock would indeed be a tight, precision piece.
