You can, but that's "down" in Leith (technically, it's North so "up", but Edinburgh folks always call it "down to Leith"!). Probably around 20 minutes on a bus from the city centre.
TBH if you've never been to Edinburgh before there's tons in the city centre all walkable.

I was in Edinburgh last August, I wasn't sure that she was still there or I'd have popped in with my friends.

Edinburgh city centre is very compact so you can see tons, just by walking up and down the high street and surrounding district. Parking is an utter nightmare, though, so as above park just outside the pay zones and get a bus. Every bus route (literally!) goes through the city centre, specifically George Street and / or Princes Street. All you need to do is make sure you're standing on the correct side of the road and heading into, not away from town!
Buses are all tap-and-go, too, and have a day wide cap so really easy.

Quick word of warning on the Dick vet school (other than it being utterly wonderful, and the people there are lovely) it is a nightmare to get to any time around rush hour. And lovely that they are, don't be surprised if the 4:30pm pick up becomes 5:30 or 6pm. It can take an hour to get from one end of the bypass to the other on a bad day, so plan accordingly.
They may also send you away for 10 or 15 minutes in the morning, and want you to come back. If so, just head across the car park to the main teaching building and you'll get a good, cheap breakie roll over there.

I was hoping of some stuff outside the city?
We are travelling up late the night before so will need place to park any tips. about 2.5 3 hours from liverpool?
If this scan is a success she will need to have treatment over 20 week days so one month in Hospital so we will be spending a bit of time in the area so looking for a county pub who will let us park overnight and we will eat and drink beer in exchange?

There's some lovely villages with, I'm pretty sure, plenty space for overnight parking; Peebles just down the road from the vets - or East Lothian... The Open Arms in Dirleton for instance.

The buses are good as well, if you did want to venture a bit further afield (not aimed at you obviously, you live there!!).

Agreed there’s plenty to do in the city, though it’s been about 10years since I last went! We used to have a regular job (every 6 months) at the Scotsman newspaper before they moved it out of the city - was a bit gutted when that soirée came to an end!!

Thanks it's been a tough time. We have Liverpool Uni Vet school on the doorstep who took a look and didn't even charge us for looking but said they couldn't treat the two suspected Tumours, Edinburgh can do a more accurate job. The thing is no one can prove 100% what it is, surgery isn't an option. The saving grace is as the two suspected Tumours are near each other that are treating both together but charging us for one!
The thing I keep thinking of hopefully she will be better for the Dandie Derby an annual meeting for the Breed in Scotland https://www.dandiederby.com/

Tebay or Anandale Water. You'll be limited in facilities at that time of night, but at Tebay the 24 hour counter has a decent selection of hot and cold food and drinks even when the restaurant is closed, and at Anandale water you'll have McDonalds and Costa Express at WH Smith.

Live dangerously the other end of the Bush road has the the biggest dry ski slope in Europe. Think there's a bit of sledging or something as well, go on you know you want to.

We are self contained so won't need food etc, We cant leave until 7.30pm and I will drive until I feel tired and then continue in the morning. Its a bit late for proper places so have to park where we can

Try a visit there now. The old building has been converted to a hotel. Marble staircases, balcony bar stain glass windows, bits of old industrial machines lying around even has its own picture house. Worth a look.

Gretna Green if you have never been there might be a reasonable stop . Check opening times

No, thankfully, I took my adult kids years ago, as they were going skiing.

Theres a truck stop at Ecclefechen Lockerbie I think, might work.

The old A74, being on the old truckers route from London to Inverness, has a few laybys that truckers used for overnight stops, and is fairly quiet at night. Follow the B7076, as the old A74 is now designated. It briefly becomes the A701, and later the A702, before reverting back to the B7076 and then, at Abington, it becomes the B7078. It's a bit of a historical road, really. You can pick it up at the Gretna junction (M6 J45). You need to keep your eyes peeled for the laybys, as they're not signposted.

Look up Gullane Sands, go a nice walk along the beach, clear the head.
