Timber windows

I'm looking to change the cream uPVC windows in our house to timber. They are fading on the South elevation and are really out-of-keeping on the type of house it is.

Photos are the sort of thing I am going to go for. The couple of companies I have been looking at seem to use Accoya. Not a timber i've come across before.

Before I enter into discussions with them, any pros/cons of this species?

just remember with wood windows they require yearly painting

with them being south facing even more so

you can also go for double glazing or tripple glazing if you want

upvc windows 10-15 years glass units are when they fail
wood windows will last longer if you care for them properly

theres is some advantages with sash windows but the main cons is there difficult to seal to keep the place warm

remember with wood windows choose a different type of closer and lock dont use the old pin type pull over and slide and lock they was great for setting opening and locking down but they are really poor as security side of it

Personally I've never heard of anyone painting exterior timber on an annual basis - five yearly perhaps but obviously depending on quality of timber, quality of painting (and prep), situation etc but who could afford to paint their doors and windows every year?

modern paints on new windows lasts way more than a year. My sister has accoya doors and windows. Sure she said they were a 10 year coating.

i had my hardwood windows made 40 years ago and still as good as new clean and paint them with micropourus paint every 2 years sadolin or farbal normaly about 80 quid a gallon but got a gallon for 35 quid from autojumble

Interesting thread. We have white UPVC on out old farmhouse and it totally ruins the look of the place. I will happily change them all for wood when funds allow. I hate the plastic fantastic look but grew up with Victorian sashes that I helped my dad rebuild as they rotted out at just over 100 years old.

I paint the woodwork on my house pretty much every year. I’m on top of a hill with nothing between me and the Atlantic. We get a hammering during the winter. I’ve used all makes of paint, none last well.

We had all of ours replaced with Accoya 5 years ago. Rock solid stuff that I’d never heard of before.
Only problem I have is the muppets used non stainless pins in the front door and they rust

I hate the look of uPVC windows and doors, the frames parts are all too large in comparison to wood. But I hate painting more which I why I fitted them to my previous house. A similar situation to Migmac, harsh weather means wood needs paint or treatment annually out here.

A house near me has recently have new upvc windows fitted - frame a light grey colour.

Obviously impressed another house owner with stnadard white upvc frames - a man in a van turned up, spent well over half a day masking up the glass and surrounding brickwork on the front of the house - he didn't look too happy up a ladder with tape and paper in a slight breeze.

Then a compressor fired up and he spent well into the evening spraying paint - house now has dark grey window frames. No idea what the finish is like close up.

I just like the fact that my new white upvc frames are pretty much maintenance free. I've better things to be doing than sanding, striping, painting window frames.

My mate is doing a barn conversion. He had the windows fitted last week. They are softwood frames with a grey aluminium cladding. Look really good but made in Poland I think.
