Timber prices

With whats going on out east timber products are going to get more expensive. No more Russian timber for starters, I cant see prices dropping, just got some 1.5mm & 3mm birch ply & that has doubled in price since i last brought some 2 years ago.
Fortunately i have a big stock of secondhand hardwood timber & good sources of the same.
A friend who lives in northumberland told me last week that there are mountains of trees down up there, only problem is milling it. A good portable bandsaw mill would soon pay for itself these days!

I'd imagine the price increases for insurance and fuel would bite a good chunk out of the benefits. Then there's storing/drying it and the costs have gone up there too, so sadly I think we all just have to get used to everything costing a lot more than it used to.

In fairness though, a lot of stuff has been artificially cheap for a long time, the problem is that the increases have come in big chunks rather than gradually.

If and hopefully we do start producing timber in the UK the quality should be better than all that other bendy split rubbish that comes from far away lands thats only fit for packing cases

Happy with how the doors turned out, a few twiddly bits left to do but a big improvement on the old ones. The scaff boards look decent and saved a fortune. I think I might just spray the inside with some decking/furniture oil rather than paint them.

Yeah, the two halves are rebated so the outer has a 1/2" overlap below the inner and it'll get a closer on the outside. Probably use a lipping strip as whatever goes on it'll be painted 'council green'.

Mate of mine builds high end speaker cabinets for Pro Audio use. He’s spent quite a few years building his business and is one of the best out there

His supply of 18mm ply has virtually dried up. Has no idea what he’s going to do next

18mm ply is still available. Weather it's available at a price he wants to pay is another matter.

Discussed timber prices with my sawmill mates, they reckon a price increase of 40% in the last two years, from what they buy, to what they sell.

Wow, I said.

Firewood has gone up at least 25% in this period.

Well, a wedding ring, but won't get a lot of wood for that, and suspect wife would not be impressed.
