At the moment he might want to look into 18 mm moisture board. It's dense MDF, green in colour and we started using it when we couldn't get ply as it's the same price as decent ply @ £50:00 a sheet. Aside from being much more stable it cuts really well and also takes coatings better as it's not as porous/absorbent. It seems to be about in reasonable amounts at the moment, no idea why that is and other sheets aren't.

I'm sure you and he will know, but it bears mentioning for anyone else reading this that 'M' class extraction/vac is a must when cutting it. Apologies for the granny eggs thing, but it really doesn't get mentioned enough how unpleasant MDF dust is.

It's a commercial unit, but yes technically they are. I wouldn't trust the knuckle draggers that they contract work out to, it'd be a right lash up. Not to mention that it'd take months/years before it actually happened. The other thing is that they're Victorian buildings that were the maintenance base for a canal reservoir and pumping station. So I'd feel better knowing what went into them.

The doors at the workshop need replacing as they're past their best to say the least. It's rented from the council, so knowing what they're like I decided it'd be quicker, a much better job and a lot less hassle just to make them myself.

I have a load of scaffold board which are getting in the way at the container, so run them through the thicknesser to get decent faces on will get me nice solid doors

They're pretty clean, no nails etc. That said, £55:00 for a set of plainer blades or a few hundred for timber? It's not a hard one to work out.

Finally got to make a start on cutting and planing the scaff boards. Not a quick process but that's OK. BTW, if anyone nearby wants a boot full of offcuts let me know.

A decent table saw is one of the things I'd like but I don't really have the room especially to swing full sheets or long timers around it. I use a combination of the big Bosch compound mitre saw and a rail saw and to be fair between those two and the thicknesser it covers everything quite well. I don't do much in the way of large numbers of repetitive cuts, and on the odd occasion where I need to I just give the local timber merchant a list.

I had an estimate today to clear the back garden 10m x 10m and pave it with the addition of a small deck in one corner. £15-20k Needless to say, it will stay as it is. Yesterday I was quoted £7500 to replace the conservatory roof.
Three years ago I could have had a complete conservatory for £8k (the same size and construction!).
It will not get any cheaper very soon and I think there will be a lot of folk who lose their businesses because many will put off the things they want sorted.

more and more are not having work done due to material prices so high

only work thats still around is the ones that need that job done now (has to be done)

ive always known the building trade just to carry on weather its a stock crash or recesssion but these prices are near on criperling the building trade

I’ve currently got that problem , a large contract ( private ) where the main project was to replace all floor joists through out due to woodworm and rot .

Project had been spilt in to two phases , phase one ( upstairs ) completed in January , got the 1st payment . With the second due to start in April as we had to wait for other trades . New floor joists and oak floor on ground floor .

I’ve just had to go and have a meeting to ask for an additional 5k in materials to finish , whilst I hold of raising my labour charges which I was going to do in April , but trying to meet in the middle .

They chocked but I went prepared with the original support quotes and showed that I had added 10% for increases plus 10% profits ….. then showed them the knew quotes for the oak , elm and stress graded , showing that I would be better off to stay in bed for 6 weeks and not work than carry on .

It was a challenge but they understood as thankfully her husband works within the supply Chain and knows I wasn’t blagging it . So tomorrow I have to order all remaining materials needed to get them at todays prices .

They are in a situation of no choice , unless they like the idea of living in a 1st floor flat and mud floors below , with a baby on route for July .

I’m booked until November already , but now have to contact multiple customers , new and repeat and explain that my estimates based on predicted prices , as I explain that no material prices are any good beyond 14 days , are now just nothing more than fire lighting material .

Mate of mine builds high end speaker cabinets for Pro Audio use. He’s spent quite a few years building his business and is one of the best out there

His supply of 18mm ply has virtually dried up. Has no idea what he’s going to do next

A mate of mine was talking to someone in the know re timber prices, he is convinced they will come down a bit but nowhere near the level they were. Off the back of that he is putting a deposit down on a huge 1.5 mtr capacity timber bandsaw, and will be getting into timber products.

I think that's the only possible upside to the current madness. A lot of businesses and even industries which no longer made economic sense in the UK may become viable again and make a return.

With whats going on out east timber products are going to get more expensive. No more Russian timber for starters, I cant see prices dropping, just got some 1.5mm & 3mm birch ply & that has doubled in price since i last brought some 2 years ago.
Fortunately i have a big stock of secondhand hardwood timber & good sources of the same.
A friend who lives in northumberland told me last week that there are mountains of trees down up there, only problem is milling it. A good portable bandsaw mill would soon pay for itself these days!
