Tiling over contact cement/glue.

We lifted a laminate floor today, and under that there was an old (could be 30 years) vinyl floor that was glued down with contact glue. After an hour of pulling I was able to get it all up, but there is plenty remnants of the glue still on what looks like a fairly soft self leveling compound.

Is there any way to seal this to create a barrier for the tile cement I'll use to lay the new tile floor?

Is it "sealing" or more the case of "bonding" that would be the issue ?

Could be fine. Could cause nightmares down the line.

at the school i do loads of work at they had the same .carpet glue here and there. they screeded it with 2 part latex leveling compound

Is there not a minimum thickness for these compounds? Applying it will raise the base level and then you have tile adhesive plus tile thickness on top of that. So the best solution will be influenced by the requirements/limitations of the finished floor level.

I went to a place where the floor was done with thick quarry tiles. They had put them under the washing machine, realised it would not go back in under the worktop and then removed them. Put the washing machine back in and tiled across the front of it. Now, the only way to get the washing machine out is to take off the worktop.

Contact adhesive is the devil to get off a screed or concrete floor (especially screed) my first port of call would be a soft wire cup wheel. You can get the 70mm ones from screwfix/toolstation for under a tenner. If it's on self levelling compound it's probably gonna be messy plus the dust is nasty from that stuff.

Depends on depth, as said before. Ideal is to take it back to sound. But SBR might be good enough.

Well I'm now ready to do something, my gut is saying rip up the old self leveler as I dont think it's bonded very well to the underlying concrete then go with new self leveler. Will have a coffee and decide what to do.

They have had the same expert tilers as came here .. Must be aa big company as they are trading all over the UK .

We have similar throughout the whole 15x 25 bungalow . Daren't start trying to do a bit at a time as I suspect the crap under is is only two to three thick on top of compacted mud if the rest of the bungalow build ( 1987) is anything to go by . I'm now 71 , crippled well past old age wear & can't do SFA about it .
It's got so bad we have to wear shoes inside and slippers outside .
The new carpets we put in carpets have been down 17 years & are saying it , it's going to be expensive sorting it out ready for our end of days final carpet fittings that are just around the corner of the year . Maybe put in underfloor GSHP pipes in and be done with it at the same time .

If this floor has to come up I have a nasty feeling even the thinnest of replacement floors will have to have well insulated underfloor eco heating by law & need planning & BCO checking at several stages
It's already on the books for new build & is likely to mission creep into modernisations & refurbishments .

The next door bungalow either side was built at the same time by the same cowboys in 1987 , about 10 years ago the pensioner who purchase it a few week before we came here replaced the Wilton carpet in a bedroom as it always smelt musty.
The carpet fitter guys lifted the old carpet & the 1/4 " of screed which was over 4 inches of fine limestone directly on top of coalmine grey clay . There is enough lift & heave in the floors of our bungalow & fine hair cracks in 10 yr old re-plastering to suggest that this bungalow has the same quality build .
