That sort of travel would only see me get to about 50 homes and most of that are because there are two small villages 3 miles either way respectively, mind you traffic problems is two guys stopped having a chat and blocking the road for ten mins.
I do agree stick to what you do, I can tile and do much other stuff but I know others I can call on who are far quicker and more experienced I can call on, if you are charging clients for things outside your area of expertise (as a job on its own not part of what you need to do) you are not a tradesman. different if its a property I own but another persons home for pay nah, I should rather pass on a telephone number!

you know its a fact that some buy the cheapest, some buy the dearest and some pick one in the middle because they are unsure. Yet we all buy from people we like and feel we can rely on and trust to do the job

Very true, A lot of our customers, if not all, say whilst we are not the cheapest by any means, they use us because they know the job will be right and we will do what we say, when we say, and any problems get sorted.
It's all about having a reputation - business becomes a bit easier then.
I think quite a bit also depends on how you get on with people - once the barriers come down and you can have a good laugh and joke with someone you work for life becomes a bit simpler with them

People have told me business becomes 'easier' after 10 years! I'm 8 years in and no sign yet!
It's a hard slog working for yourself as I'm sure a lot of people on here will experience - certainly a lot easier working for someone else IMO!

Laying the stuff out straight and keeping it all square is easy enough. It's keeping stuff like that all on the same level/plane which is the awkward bit, from experience of the little I've done. That's the reason I hate tiling or owt of similar vein. Laying a flag, for example. I can merrily spend ten minutes trying to level one, and I usually end up resorting to jumping up and down on a corner/edge to get the thing level. I don't do flags or tiling much, as you can likely tell.

I'm sure the only people who say stuff like that are the ones who've never actually done it themselves.
When you think about it though, the amount you've changed in your ideas and approach towards being self employed, over those eight years, you'd likely make it look like it was a breeze if someone who was just starting out was watching you. I suppose that advice is true, in its way.Easier, definitely. Preferable though, probably not for a lot.

I could never cope with working for someone else or being a regular paye employee. I don't get going home when there is still plenty to do and I certainly don't get coming in on time to do very little and try and look busy in the lean times, when your far better off going out with the rod or gun and generally chilling a bit. Its also a little thrill of the chase that appeals to me, the big catch on one hand and the chance of total failure on the other. Over twenty years in for me so I suppose I might be a lost cause to persuade otherwise, been forced into it once for 12mnths from a business I owned failing and also once early doors by the taxman under the old year in arrears payment scheme (made a stack in my first year, spent it then 5 companies went bust in a row owing me big money in the second, back then BOE interest rates were 17% so a slow down was more a slamming on of the breaks and many otherwise good firms hit the wall) I had to sell two stupidly flashy cars I bought (I was only in my twenties) give the taxman a lump sum and a firm guaranteed monthly amount to pay back the debt- it took me 18mnths and my first week back on my own paid more than a month in that job.
My employee period effectively ended with me ripping off my visor throwing it at the boss and issuing forth a few choice words, gosh it was a shame it was a darn good visor and I was quite attached to it, split screen type and I cant even find one now all the other guys left it well alone to boot and I could leave it anyplace coz they all thought they might get arc eye !
