tiling cost

I was working on £125 a day for small jobs (under 10m2) when I was a tiler, that was 6 years ago, I would never put less than 12mm ply down on a wood floor, I would use flexible adhesive to fix the ply and screws every 12 inches to make a grid. The £125 would be for prep work and tiling regardless, I would never work for less, such as half days etc, a full day rate minimum.

u wouldnt be getting 200 quid a day if u worked for me at that rate not that it mattered i do my own

That's the point, I hate tiling with a passion, I'm too fussy so it takes ages but as a heating engineer/plumber its kind of expected that I do it

well based on the rate of 35 per m2 I should be charging a sniff over 300 for this job as it works out as near as makes no difference 9 m2. Its quite a big difference between what I have been charging, but I can see why people would think I am too cheap

You might be suprised at how high you can pitch yourself and still win the work. Sounds like your busy working for nothing at the moment. I did the same though, try to price it as cheap as possible - now its the other way round, try to squeeze as much out as you possibly can... Business at the end of the day.

Someone dared me once, when i first set out, to price a job as normal, then double it and give that price to the customer..reckoned i would still get the job, which we did.

Don't work for nowt mate, and nugget can do that.

I've done the double it trick, priced a biggish job I really didn't want, doubled it and got it, then he recommended me to his bridge club pals, who all got the same treatment

if your any good and competent and fast enough u can command your price and choose your jobs . i dont advertise no name on van and im not in the phone book. i wont go price jobs after work and normaly dont travel more than 5 miles to jobs . i can do 95 percent of the jobs in the building trade but just do my own job

my eyes have been opened lads. I am far too cheap and I think I'm suffering because of it. I am going to meet customer and quote them in the morning, and I'm going to quote 340. Will see what they say. To put it into perspective for you all, the last floor tiling gig I did about 5 weeks ago, roughly the same size give or take a few inches I charged 130. I have just worked out roughly in my head that if I had quoted each job at a proper price and not try and be the cheapest around I would have a nice shiny van and around 2k in the bank, where as at the moment I am working from a hatchback and barely covering my bills.

so, onwards and upwards, lets see how long it takes to get a van sorted now that I know how thick I have been

room is relatively square, quite flat, wooden floor but already have enough ply to lay down and screw to boards etc. Have to make about 6 straight cuts in this one. Customer has got tiles in, I already have adhesive and a bag of grout paid for from last job I did. Will have to move fridge and washer out of the way and pull old vinyl up too

dunno, will be checking tomorrow. The fridge is fine as its in a corner not under a counter, washer should have enough gap above it at the moment.

well....they accepted the quote! Didn't even hesitate. They said they were expecting closer to 500! So, job is on for Monday afternoon, I have nothing to get in for it and as an added bonus the floor is concrete not wood as they first told me.

and yes the washer will still fit, there is over an inch of clearance at the moment

good all depends on what the floor is like after the lino comes up
in my utility room the washer touches the counter top but they was big tiles that i put down

it wont be too much of a job to level it off. peeled the loose part of the vinyl back, came up with no effort, floor looks ok there. might have a few low spots dotted around.

what is best way to fill them to get the tiles level? more adhesive?

Last floor I did I used some super duper fill/grab adhesive stuff, came in a silicone type tube and could be built up as thick as needed, can't remember what it's called tho

depends how uneven a little bit use adhesive or a lot it needs floor screeding you want to tell them if the floor is bad
when all vynal removed if it needs screeding it will cost extra

i used some of the same came ready mixed in plastic buckets not cheap though

best way will be to find the high spots put a tile on the highest spot allow for some adhesive and start tilling at that height if its not too bad otherwise you will get to a high spot and the tiles will be proud when you reach the high spots

yeah that's whay I figured, just wondered if it was just a case of using more adhesive in the low spots to compensate, or if I had to level the floor first then tile on that

I always insist on using self levelling compo in concrete floors, goes down the day before I tile..... if it is bad use deepbase and always use the recommended primer

See, you're underselling yourself You can always drop your price a bit if they grumble, but never put it up once you've committed. You've left £160-00+ 'on the table' which would buy you quite a few pints for doing no more work than you are now!

Start high, drop a bit if you have to.

I was prepared to drop to 280, and was expecting to have to to be honest. Still cant believe they accepted it without even thinking.
