tig welds on 2.5mm CDS tube

hey guys done a bit of tig today just wanted to post the resuts for comment. i found it quite tricky as the jig i used wouldnt fit on the bench so ended up working on the floor :-(

anyway here are the pictures.

i found it quite tricky to get the heat into the piece in some spots without melting the edge away. could anyone suggest a trick for doing it?

They look like strong welds
I know what a pain it is to weld tubing.
I have seen professional setups with little turntables where they could rotate the parts while welding

i hope they are strong :-) they are part of the suspension for my kit car. is it wierd that i like tig more than mig lol.

i would love one of those little motorised tables but it would have been useless for this as i had to weld it in a jig as the tolorance for movement is very little.

I use cds tube to make adjustable hinges for gates. normally 17mm ID with a 4mm wall. the tube is cut to around 30mm then a piece of 12mm threading is welded to the side, so it looks like a T. Now this has to be well welded to the tube a breakage results in hinge that fails. I did about 12 the other day, all well burnt on there. Didnt realise that i had over burned some of them. The end result being i couldnt get them to fit over a 16mm pin. Whoops

The only thing I would work on is your stops. The rest of the weld looks great. At the stop you want it flat or a slight nipple, not an indentation. The indentation can cause a stress point where the weld could fail.

Ashg have you got a foot pedal for your tig. Because that sure helps with what wildcat is talking about. Allowing you to back the power off at the end leaving a slight nipple as wild cat calls it. meaning when you restart you can flatten it out with a little over power, by a quick push on the foot pedal.

my tig has slope out think i will start using it.

Ash up until i got my foot pedal a few months ago thats how i did it, by setting the slope out. it might take a little fiddling about to get it right but its worth it
