just got a free full bottle of corgon 18,can i tig weld stanless with this?i've got a book that say that you can but before ruin a nice peace of stanless i want to ask if someone have done it and how was the results
i'm a newbi but i read a lot,i know that i need pure argon for tig but want to know if the book i'm reading is corect or not.
it says
helium for every weldable metal, best penetration, flat looking welds, not easy to start an arc,
argon for every weldable metal, good penetration, good for gas mix, good looking welds but not flat, also good for plasma & cheaper than helium
argon helium mix good for aluminium & copper & espesialy for thick aluminium
argon-co2 mix good for stanless steel & clean steel
c02 just for clean steel
so i want your inputs
As Paul said, any gas containing CO2 is no good with TIG. CO2 has an oxidising effect, you'll be wasting your time trying to use it as it'll instantly oxidise the tungsten wrecking the tip and filling the weld with bits of tungsten. Not an issue with MIG/MAG as the 'tip' is constantly being deposited into the weld
The gas you've got is for MIG/MAG welding carbon steel. The book you quoted... gases and gas mixes are as dependant on welding process as they are on material. PURE argon will cover you for every material with TIG
