TIG Welding outside?

Hi

I want to do my TIG welding outside. It will be small pieces of stainless steel and I will wait until its a good day without wind. I have loads of wood shavings in my main workshop hence the need to be outside.

Is it possible? As you can guess I'm a TIG newbie.

Welcome to the forum.

I don't have a TIG set-up, but there's no pyrotechnic display like you get with Mig or Arc [MMA], so unless you're right among the wood shavings I'd think you'd be OK.

I'm sure others with experience of Tig will be along to confirm or otherwise.

Yes no bother Adri.

Keep the unit dry and your leads out the crap if you can.

Remember gas shielding. It's not just a case of whopping the flow up unless you like spending money on argion Get some protection from the weather and remember to watch out for livestock and people nearby. They like to watch the blow fairy dance ^_^

Adri. Today I witnessed a man tig welding whilst laying across a cushion on the living room carpet.
Go nuts mate and weld in the wood you'll be fine!!!

I hate to be the exception but a blob of rod dropped onto a towel that i had under my aluminium motorbike silencer while welding, setting it on fire, and i had to quickly gather it up and run out the shed while trying to clap the flames out.

You do right to keep out the wood shop with shavings.
Tig might not spit spatter much at all but all welding and hot work is a serious fire risk

Depends how much. Wood dust in the air can actually create an explosion

If someone runs a small joinery shop full on clean up requires much damping down etc. Not just a sweep up

The stuff floats about in the air and it furthermore only needs a spark or such into a crevice missed or inaccessible

I tig outside sometimes,
obviously shield from the wind as much as possible with boards etc,
use a gas lens which will give you better gas shielding of the weldpool and crank the gas up slightly to about 8-10Lpm,
thats about all you can do and where possible wait for the least windy day.
