I always thought that a certain amount of flex in the sidewall was supposed to help the tyre stick to the road, the wall flexes rather than the tyre loosing it's grip, isn't it the aspect ratio or something like that.
Low profile modern car tyres have almost zero flex - how can they when there is almost no rubber left?
Yes the aspect ratio is the width of the tyre related to diameter = the sidewall height.
When I was stranded the RAC came out with an universal spare wheel. He looked at my wheels - they are 20" it wont fit only good for an 18". I said I told them that on the phone so why did you come out? I tried explaining to him that the insignia was fitted with 18,19 and 20" wheels - only difference was the sidewalls got lower as the diameter increased. The hubs stay the same which meant the wheel would fit. He wouldn't even try and said he knew his job - I didn't even bother to argue - obviously way beyond him..................
Yes if you look purely at the tyre. But when choosing a wheel for a car then as the diameter of the wheel increases then the profile of the tyre has to decrease to keep the overall diameter the same. Just my bad way of explaining it!

I would of thought he would have tried it, but to be slightly fair to him, different versions often have different brakes etc, so a smaller dia may not have cleared calipers, hoses etc. I certainly couldn't drop wheel dia on my Alfa due to the uprated, larger, brakes compared to a lower spec model.
I can't understand this fascination with ultra low profile tyres. Width definitely - the Insignias I drive usually have 245 width which is just about right - not good in the wet though. They come with 18, 19 and 20" wheels. I was stranded last week after hitting a pothole and bursting a tyre - I don't think the 18" wlould have been a problem as it has a bigger sidewall.
They say the lower the sidewall the better in bends but you will never tell the difference. Just look at a F1 car! Although they are about to switch to lower profiles.
There is one big advantage with ultra low profile - even without run flats if you have a puncture you hardly feel it - my Discovery leans over like the tower of pisa with a flat!
F1 wheel size is in the rules - if they had free rein they'd have lower profiles.
My Challenger has 20" rims with 245/45 tyres - I can barely lift the things back on! ;-)
Same size as my insignia! My Jag only had 255 with 510bhp.
I had an Audi A4 diesel 140bhp lease car with 255 section tyres - ruined the car - deadly in the wet - way too wide for the car.

Probably not as low as a lot of road cars though, most race series end up between a 45 and a 60 profile.

Someone brought in a wheel that had been repaired about 10 times it looked like a clock , asked me to weld it , I told him where to go and called him a few names, if each repair was £30 that wheel cost him £300 on repair he could of bought a brand new wheel twice over ! The worst of it be was a taxi driver !

Next to my garage there is an old chap doing exact that straightening buckled alloy wheels and then he dresses up the welds till it looks right. Guess what, after welding couple of dozen wheels for him we only had one come back cracked about an inch and a half next to the weld. It was a mercedes alloy wheel 19"... We also done many motorsport alloy wheels, some magnezium and they weld well... Its pity i dont take many pictures of the almost imposible wheels hes repaired, that in the image is quite an easy repair in his opinion asuming the spokes are not bent! He uses a large torch to heat the alloy and a selection of hammers to get it back to shape, then it gets welded and finished with a large selection of grinding/flap discs till it looks right. Many times they dont need muxh lead on to balance, the guy is really an artisan!

Just a bit of chamfer and few decent root pases to get good penetration with good preheat and jobs a good one! I have seen many stitched togheter with alloy body filler with judtva good blow over... Thats a no-no!
I have done This one 2years ago, it’s off a sprinter LWB that does international transport and carry regularly over 4.5 t in the rear + a twin car trailer ! It holds pretty well still...have done similar wheels and they are still in one piece today !
