TIG welding 304 grade S/S to copper.

Anyone successfully nailed this stuff together, both 2mm thick? I've been given sound advice on what consumable to use, I'll be giving it a go within the next couple of weeks, any info on how this stuff behaves will be great..........

Not with TIG (only done it with silversolder) but i'm curious which filler was recommended. Aluminiumbronze or something else?

My thinking (alright, guess!) is that getting enough heat into the copper without cooking the stainless may take some practice

I used to make some stainless steel header tanks which had a copper tube silver soldered in, never thought or realised it could be tig welded, must be a tig brazing or dissimilar process then?.

I'd be interested to know as well, I've been using Plumbing solder, to fit 15mm copper pipe to SS drip channels

I have been tig welding ss 316 to copper at work.. I think we used Cu/ni Copper/nickel filler. Because the 316/304 contains nickel I belive..

Close G_Yog, learned friend recommended Metrode "Nickel 2Ti ERNi-1".

HR good point re heat ratio between two matls.

Paul, will be TIG all the way.

I'll pass on hows things went when I get the shout to trial weld the stuff together.

You need to get the Copper hot before you start. The filler can be pure Nickel (ER Ni1) or Nickel Copper (70/30) ER NiCu-7

Ahhh nickel the whore metal . Do you need large root gaps to prevent/limit dilution between the stainless and the copper or does the nickel rich filler mean it's not an issue?
