tig welder

hi

i am just in the prosess in buying a tig welder, would mainly for welding alliminium, (model plane silencers). i have searched on the forums and have come up with 4 that i think will do. lorch t220 \ r\tech 200 \ thermal-arc 202 \parweld xti2o1.
i have about £1300 to spare, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Have you seen a 2nd hand T220? As a new one wouldn't fit in your budget.

If your only doing exhausts( which I imagine will be thin material) then maybe you could look at the T 180 AcDc or HandyTig 180, might be a bit closer to your budget

A Parweld 200XTI ACDC or R-Tech 200 would do the job perfectly, I've used both and been impressed

I bought a Parweld XTI201 last spring, it has not been used as much as I wanted to as work got in the way of learning to weld with it. ;( I am only on my second 10L bottle of Argon, that is how little use I have had from it but as you would hope, so far it has not had any problems. It is the first and only TIG welder I have ever used so I can not give any opinion as to how it compares to your other options.


Edit: I have just remembered one small gripe: the pot on the pedel which limits maximum current is easily moved by mistake. It needs some sort of guard made up to stop unexpected changes.

It looks more versatile / complicated than my XTI201 enjoy.

Good luck with your Tig choice dave. I am new to the Tig technique but after buying my own machine, I am slowly picking it up as i go. That system you have chosen doesn't look to bad at all, far cheaper than my T220! Good luck with the silencer making, I came out of Large RC aircraft back in 2000 ish now... so much has changed!

It will be cheaper but every machine he mentioned apart from the T are manufactured in China! Not made by the companies offering them.

If your going to compare prices it has to be on comparable quality units made in a EU country.

But I guarantee the products he named in his short list are no way on the same quality level as a T 220! Absolutely without a shadow of a doubt.

not to late hotrodder, havent got it yet, i just cant make my mind up now, keep getting told to leave chinnese stuff alone. i could skint my self and get the lorch t220, but dont know if it would justify for the welding that i would do. will do a bit more research 1st b4 i buy 1. thanks for the info on the thermal-arc. just for curosity, the lorch that i have looked at came to £2700 is this about right price.

Hi Dave it really depends on how much and for what your going to use it?

It's a very big outlay if its only going to be switched on once a month.

Just my two cents worth but the thermal arc has a prity poor duty cycle

When I was looking for a tig set. I viewed the duty cycle as a sneaky peek at three real quality of the insides.
Kind of an exray into the true quality of the guts of the welder

was having the same thought about the duty cycle. this 1 has a better duty cycle, and the after sale sounds ok.

that was one the selling points for me for buying that model, 100% @ 160amps,

if you need more than that you need a bigger welder?
