Yes mate the hat went to the bin while the esab hung around for more abuse..

As for now? Who knows what's going on.. Not sure if it's me? My set up or crap steel.. Could be all three I guess..

My tungsten tips needed improvement and I remembered as you said about keeping a seperate grind wheel etc just for them.. Use acetone and flap
wheels too..

I've a esab warrier helmet now.. Adj 1-10..

I use the same wheel for sharpening drills, lathe tools, tungstens & pencils.
I've never used or suggested others should use acetone,
and I certainly never sharpen on a flap wheel.
BTW you might find an Esab warrior is a shade 9 to 13.


Noods, if you have a problem taking in, and remembering information, then take notes. Write it down.

Many is the time I've written down a setting on a bit of masking tape and stuck it on the side of the machine.

I didn't say you recommended sharpening tungstens on a flap wheel.. I said, how you suggested I get some accetone for cleaning steel and flap wheels for cleaning up the project metal before welding..

And yes I might have got muddled on the settings on a esab warrier, but isn't it just suffice that I took your advice and got one...?

72 hours on nights tends to have effects on a lot of peoples memory's ... Try it sometime..

Sorry I obviously don't live up to your standards but hey don't fret.. I'm still trying my best and most importantly smiling my way though life ... And if I entertain people along the way, great.. Who could ask for more....

No it's not a crack mate it's where the 2mm plate is on top .. I think that's what your looking at ... I asked for steel you but you might well be correct though.. It came from a boat repair yard! .. It's very Heavy .. Does a magnet attract to cast iron ?

Sorry that wasn't very clear!
I think you need to try a different gas bottle and or machine. I've heard of at least three cases of bad/wrong gas. And I do feel that's what could be your problem. While tungsten prep,pre/post flow etc etc are hugely important it's still possible to lay a fairly decent bead if they are not perfect. I sharpen tungstens on a belt sander that's used for everything and it's never been a problem. Not saying that's ok but you get my point. I really do think you take Richard or any one who is willing to help you on there offer

I know you said your seeing improvements but I'm not so sure. You need someone over your shoulder for a few hours. I'm more than happy to do it if you want to travel an hour and 15 and I'm sure that buddy will be singing like a bird by the time we are done but untill you take those steps reading and guessing is gonna lead to an esab hitting the bottom of a bin. I'll be reading with interest but I don't feel it's fair on you to keep advising when the only advise that's gonna be any good is face to face. I do hope you do this and whom ever shows you the ropes gets that little buddy kicking out some great welds with a Noods in the driving seat. Good luck.

People often ask "can you weld this?" My reply is often (with the tig) "it's not up to me, the TIG will decide" haha, It's not until you strike an arc you find out how good a bit of steel is Anyway picked up some alloy sheet today and it had a bad time with the TIG, reason was tiny flecks of grinding dust on the surface, even when cut back with a sanding pad the specs (pepper) were deep enough to cause a riot with my tungsten! Just shows you...

Do you mean heat tint. The HAZ is not visible from the surface. It can only be seen from a cut and etched sample.

Have you made sure its pure argon in your bottle, not an argon/CO2 mix? What does the label on the shoulder of the bottle actually say?
