What other gas can you use for tig welding?
Only just started tiging at colledge and want to get some practice in at home,, pure argon seems very expencive to learn with at home?
IS THERE ANY OTHER GAS THAT CAN BE USED as to try and buy/rent a argon bottle whilest being unemployed is very hard,,As only at colladge 2 hours one day a week?? ,,,john

There are a few gases that can be used, but pureshield Argon is probably the cheapest option.
The other ones are mixed gases, most containing helium.

Dont be tempted to try CO2, of argohield types usually used for Mig welding, it won't work.

I wasted two years trying to teach myself to Tig weld using the wrong gas, I was trying to use Argon/CO2 mix as used foe Mig welding. Very frustrating. Definitely a dont bother situation.

Good luck John, you have just saved yourself a massive headache. Maybe try to crib a bit of extra time welding at college in lunchtmes etc.

I only go on thursday night 2 hours a week 6 30-- 8 30 but get there around 1/4 to 6 and start straight away if i can so am getting a bit more time for my money ,Just finnished doing my mig course and started tiging last week So what is being said is only straight ARGON ??,,,,

Yep, the alternatives are all more expensive and are only really used for specialised work. For example argon/helium mixes for aluminium, argon/hydrogen mixes for stainless and nickel alloys

The tungsten needs to be preserved while welding, CO2 has an oxidising effect result is an instantly dead tungsten. On the plus side pure argon works with all materials for TIG.
