Tig for £1300

A mate of mine is after setting up with a TiG machine. He has been advised by someone where he works that the machine to go for would be the GYS 180 HF ac/dc and the price in the catalogue is listed at £1290, this is in biro, so I reckon the rep wrote it in.

I dont know if the deal is all in, e.g. everything youd need to start right away. Or if then other stuff such as torches need to be bought, the catalogue is a bit vague. A short session on Google tells me the price aint great exactly.

Is this a good welder for this price bracket?

I did search the machine on the forum by the way but never got owt back.

Unrelated, but on the link Wyn posted, in products they hace a "shock resistant" version of one of them, looks like quite a nice idea, if a little simple in its solution.

certainly not the best machine out there , ive had to use one this week a dc unit not the one you refer to ... much prefer my IFL unit .
check what warranty you get with the gys , you want at least a 2 year warranty .

The blokes dealing with a rep I believe, so he can certainly ask about any warranty. I get the feeling from the replies so far that not many here are very impressed with this machine!

Basically, he wants it for aluminium repairs, we are motorcycle restorers.
Personally I want to stick with MiG, between us we have 3 sets already, and learn to get the machines right for alloy ect, but do concede a TiG may well be better in the long run but expensive. Is there no metals TiG cannot weld?

Personally I would not buy any GYS machines, have had nothing but trouble with them, they are basically a throw away if anything goes wrong with them, which is usually the case in my experience

Regardless of the machine make, it does really sound like you need a tig, considering the work is on relatively thin metal and needs to be pleasing to the eye.

I bought a GYS machine last year, it lasted 2 hours. Luckily i got my money back. I now have a superior machine

I have been to that company who's webiste is shown, Unitech.

Its near Mumbai in India, they also sell our Lorch stuff. I had to do some demos and product training for them Autum last year.

It was right near the place where the Monkey photo was taken in my photo albums
