TIG for Dummys

Hy. i`m new in this business... i`ve have a mme/tig inverter, argon tube, tig gun with many heads


an dont know how to set it up....


1. what is the proper air flow rate (L/MIN)
2. what is the proper amperage for a tungsten electron (diameter)
3. proper amperage for a thickness of metal
4. how many tungsten models exists and for what welding are good
5. i`ve experimented with + on the tig gun and the tungsten melted.... so never put + on the gun?


just these question for now...... ))

All the stuff you need is on the Miller site -- do a search for TIG there -- but especially here.

Some people have the torch +ive for DC TIG of aluminium (an obsolete process) but for absolutely everything else the torch is negative.

thx for the site...... but i have a problem.... my welding are crapy...why i`ve got holes in the welds and why the metal it`s boiling ... p.s. i use scratch stat (and my wolfram point it`s getting rounder like a tear drop)

I think you need more gas.

What colour is your tungsten?

Oh, and did you clean the metal properly before welding?

7 l / min of argon and it`s a red tip tungsten

What filler rods are you using? If you're using gas filler rods with tig you can get porosity.

i`ve changed the rods and got better results


but on the back side the welds are verry rough

The numbers on the rods seem to be 308L which is a stainless rod. The back side of the weld will look like this unless you get into stuff like using shielding gas on the back side of the weld.

Sure looks like Stainless rod to me, Steel rods are usually copper coated

The rods say clearly ER308L - Stainless rods.

mda.... and i didn`t know.... i`ve asked for some rods and i`ve got stainless steel..... now i`m looking again for rods but just steel...

Firefox zoom image plugin is a real help for these old eyes

I've never installed the zoom plugin but holding ctrl and rolling the mousewheel or pressing + or - on the keyboard zooms in or out .
Definitely 308 rods too .

Works in firefox and IE, careful with firefox though, if you've set custom fonts (like me ) it messes them up.

I reckon they might be SS rods, mild steel ones are usually copper plated. Also are you using the right gas?
I fannied around for over a year trying to Tig weld with Mig gas mix, I had some results but the were not up to much, so I put it down to bad technique and persevered, the gave up. I few weeks back I got hold of some pure Argon. Sorted.
