I am going to look at the cobra lathe. Done some research on them, very popular with model makers but i wonder if they are upto the job of boring a throttlebody? I don't have the space for a proper milling machine or lathe nevermind the funds or justification for the limited volume I plan on doing.

If anyone can share any experience of these hobby units.......

my lathe is a Hobbymat MD65 so of similar size and you can do milling in a lathe, either horizontal boring or using a veritical slide. I made this Stuart 10H engine using a bench drill and lathe (the base is 8" x 6"). This was my first project in model engineering over 20 years ago.

Once you've bought a small lathe you can still spend hundreds of pounds on tooling and accessories to enable you to do what you want to do. If you're wanting to do milling in a lathe this book may be worth a buy and may help you decide if you'll be able to do what you think you want to do, before spending hundreds on a lathe/accessories/tooling that wont be suitable for your needs

YThe Cobra lathe by Chester is the same lathe as all the others in the mini lathe range,just rebranded with another name.

what you pay for these lathes you can get a more serious lathe which is slightly bigger but designed for better precision.

That 'old metal lathe' could be a.false economy, doesn't appear complete and no change-gears for screwcutting, the myford is more like it but spendy...
a used industrial lathe is a better bet IF you have room and can move it, my 2-ton toolroom lathe (threading gearbox, power feeds, lots of power, rigid as Gibraltar) cost me about 500 including hiring a plant trailer and Landcruiser to pull it...

Like most of us its a case of getting the smaller lathe to which he has pointed out in his post,hence why I posted smaller lathes and to be honest if that old lathe goes cheap enough it will be all he needs for doing the buisness he has intended.

He can customise it at leisure and the added bonus of that lathe it has gear plate divider ?on the head stock.

Yep, space is in short supply.in British houses, for sure... All the same, if he has room a bigger lathe will be cheaper for what he gets, as most are looking for small lathes, pushing prices up :-(
A threading gearbox and power feeds make industrial lathes a lot.more fun to use, and the build quality's in another class (I worked for an importer of Chinese machinery, definitely.built down to a price!).
Mine's not huge, would fit across a single garage, just built heavily and still all works and accurate.60 years on - no worse than a small lathe for spares, and much easier to use!

Try to get the biggest machine you can, little lathes are not very ridged so a job will take ages taking tiny cuts. An old Boxford / Myford is far better and not that much bigger in footprint.

Even I'll admit that once you go above 3-1/2" or so with lathes, the beefiness does go up disproportionately. I like my small lathes, but the sturdiness and build is worlds apart once you pass that little step up in size.

Well i have been pondering your advice, I am now looking for an old myford in serviceable condition. It looks like I could squeeze one in. I realise they are nearly double the money but what you get is some proper engineering, leaning towards a myford bench mounted unit and being made in Nottingham you know they are quality.

have been doing some research on youtube and found some excellent videos done by MIT and 2 hours later I can't wait to get one and start playing. Looks like the misses may become a lathe widow!

Anyone know of a decent ml7 give me a shout, i don't mind travelling especially if it has some useable tools with it.

Wear and damage to all the sliding surfaces, play in the headstock bearings, condition of leadscrew, full function check,single or 3ph motor, all the gears for thread cutting there? Is it on a stand or are you going to have to budget for building / buying one? Condition of chucks and how many goodies are included, the price of accessorys soon adds up. This is all hampered by the fact second hand lathes are often in the corner of a dark outbuilding with no power!

You really need someone who knows about a lathe to come with you,bit like buying a car you need a mechanic to suss it out.

Can't give you any pointers,He's basically listed the lathe in the same pics maybe he hasn't the nouse to sell stuff but when you're listing a machine you try and take pics at all the working parts and areas unseen rather than replicating the first pic.

It does look like a nice lathe,what i have noticed it has the oilers the on the bearings most ML7's I have looked at never seen them on,its missing the live centers on the tailstock but he's not listed any extras in the listing and there might be extras?

here's my way of making butterflies, I've just done these as one off's in the past
1) work out the angle of the butterfly in the throttle bore with the throttle closed. I use a depth gauge on vernier calipers and trigonometry.

2) machine a wooden wedge to the correct angle, I use a small angle plate on a rotary table on a vertical milling machine like this

3) then stick the wooden wedge to centre of a faceplate on a lathe with double sided sticky tape, and then stick an oversized (diameter) disk to the wooden wedge with double sided sticky tape.

4) centre drill the disk on the lathe and use a centre in the tailstock to keep it all together.

5) turn down the butterfly to the correct diameter, it will be rotating at an angle but the edges will be the correct profile.

6) take the butterfly off the wooden wedge and assemble in the spindle in the throttle bore and with a scriber mark the mounting holes for the butterfly. it can be fiddly to get the alignment right first time

7) take the butterfly out of the throttle bore and and drill the mounting holes. and there you have it a new butterfly.

That's what I thought, I noticed the tailstock was missing the chuck. I did email him and it's single phase, although that makes no difference as a have an inverter which i use to run the extractor on my booth, and he said I can see it working. His feedback is good as it appears he sells a lot of tackle but that doesn't really mean anything.

Well the fact he's letting anyone see it working and look it over says its pretty decent lathe.

As far as the live center or chuck is concerned they're in abundance and not thin on th ground because the taper is common.
