thresher jack?

Anyone know what this is for, its def a jack and apparently used for a thrashing machine. It tilts at 45 degrees too but not horizontal. It says on the side lifts up to 15 tons. Made by Gibbin and co ltd Birmingham and date is 1856
Any ideas anyone??

It looks like whats know nowadays as a high lift jack.
Similar ones to this where used to lift railway wagons to change the wheels. They where racheted up then ratcheted down by swinging an arm/lever to reverse the pawl on the rack.

I was thinking it looks like a Hi-Lift (or Farm Jack) too.

If think you are correct, the jack is intended to be used laid down, the foot against the next sleeper, and the forked end under the nail/shoe of the you want to remove

Big old thing driven by a steam engine, that was also made at the works at one time, and latterly tractors. As the jack was made in Brum it would be no surprise if it was suplied with one of these.

Thanks epicylic, thats very interesting as dad said it was for a thrashing machine, it could have had multiple uses, the railways jacks are very similar.

now thats what i call A WORKS full of rivetted o/h cranes floor covered in internal railway tracks,a huge long bed lathe with a helicopter next to it that looked tiny,internal lift shafts,a charming oak panelled directors office with wall plans of steam engines.it was used by NETTLEHAM ENGINEERING -i went there to buy a forge off them in'95.
