i want 3 phase in my premises, and jesus i knew it was'nt going to be easy it looks like its going to be war. how can a country claim to be interested in promoting manufacturing when they will deny a basic industrial power supply. my 400 amp miller is only firing at 250 mps max on single phase connection (never minding what damage 220-240 spikes and drops does to the machine itself) and most of the rest of my tools are a waiting, anyway it has never been easy and never will be, manufacturing in britain is dead, long live manufacturing in britain!!

Hi,any of the utility companys will put in a 3 phase supply but it will cost a lot of money.
I friend of mine had a 3ph supply installed to his workshop.They came,dug up the street,laid approx 15m of cable and charged him £2500!!...That was western power.
Then he needed a sparky to do the internal work,that was another £1000.
So sorry its gonna cost you mate.

i was lookin on google about gettin 3 phase in a house and people where saying theyd spend over £10k so get it done its ridiculous, it'd be interesting to find out about people getting it in a house like the cost and how they went about it

True. £2,500 really doesn't go far. If it'd been £10k, I wouldn't have been surprised.
Even if you look at the labour for just the job alone - say 3 men, 1 day to dig the hole and fit cable, then another crew of three to make good, plus the machinery, cable, tarmac etc... not much change from a couple of grand. And that's not including overheads.

20 amp three phase? Usually a minimum of 100 amp per phase over here iirc. We have 200 amp per phase and its still not enough!

there not that great for anything intensive, the duty cycle will keep cutting it out and i imagine theyll need a hefty power source and itll cost alot in electricity, if you could some how get it done for £2500 itd soon work out cheaper and better to do it that way
In france, pretty much every house has three phase (well my mum and her neighbours all do), but the current per phase is pretty low.
You pay your standing order tarrif according to what current requirements you have. Im on 25amp/phase (75 amp/17kw) although I could have up to 100 per phase (and pay a stinking big standing charge every month for the priviledge). I can live with that, just remember to turn off the mill to use the lathe, theres only one of me
Most people I know who arent heavy users save money by buying the 10amp holiday useage tarrif and wonder why the over current device (the disjoncter) trips out when they have the hoover and kettle switched on using the same phase...
Interestingly EDF electricity generated in french nuclear stations is lots cheaper when sold by them in the uk, nothing like a monopoly and benefitting your home country eh?

Hi,before you buy a convertor,check with the manufacturer that it will be ok with a welder.You may have problems if using invertor sets as the convertors are built for inductive loads.
Additionaly the stop/start of a welder will cause massive current spikes.

Forget a converter for a welder. If it's a 240v/415v set than it only needs two wires to work (live and neut or 2 phases). A converter won't do anything. More KW is what's needed, either by upping the current on the input, or upping the voltage.

my tig set is 380v 2 phases i think so i think it can be rewired somehow, i have a big mig set which is 440v so its 100% 3 phase, i never use it above 200 amps but do stop start type welding all day with it, the manufacturers agent says a converter will work as long as its a digital one.

Makes me think of the question about electric vehicles I've yet to see answered:
any electric vehicle with a useful range* needs a minimum of 32amp (and preferably much higher) to get a reasonable charge (range) on an overnight re-charge. The timing of the charging is certain to co-incide with the morning and evening peaks and is additional to whatever the household is already drawing.
So how much will it cost to reinforce the distribution to 'every' household? Will that be borne by all households as an 'environmental tax' or will each individual electric vehicle owner have to pay?
Does this mean that all new build houses should have 3 phase 50-100 amp/phase supply laid in?
Let's ignore the generation issue for now!
* to me that is 250 miles at the same level of performance as my existing vehicle - not an electric scooter to get 3 miles to the commuter railway station at a speed of 25mph.

Yup sounds very familiar. my mum's house has electric radiators too, so if the radiators are on because the fire's not warmed the place up yet, you can't have the oven or kettle on at the same time!

remember we are talking about power. The power is equal to the volts x current
So lets say you have a single phase supply with only 1 amp maximum (keeps the numbers simpler)
so you have a max power of 240W
That is the absolute maximum you can draw. More power will result in more amps and if your supply has a max of 1amp then it will overload obviously.
Maybe an inverter will provide 3 phases but again we come back to the power (240W in the example) which directly relates to the current drawn.
Mind you a standard domestic supply is rated at 60A, which at 240V = 14.4kW. Whats the max power of the 400A mig? (400A at 10v is only 4kW, but 400A at 100v is 40kW)
