As I understand it, an inverter welder is a bit like an SMPS, ie a non-linear load that causes distortion of the sine wave with harmonics, rather than displacement (leading/lagging).

Put another way, cos(phi) tells you leading/lagging, ie capacitive/inductive, but you have to factor in THD to get the overall PF.


Probably moot as most will have power factor correction.
