Personally if i was starting from scratch and building up machines as they cam along i would probably go with VFD's.
At the moment i have 2 rotary phase converters as i have the need to run up various motors and bits of kit juts for test purposes.
As well as some 3 phase machines with transformers and dc drives.
15 / 20 years ago vfd were more expensive and the lower end of of the market was plagued with reliability issues.(as were some phase converters)
But with the price of Chinese drives and the increased reliability, now they have all of the early issues sorted out vfd would probably be the way to go.
