three legged welding stool.

So I pushed myself to start clearing the garage so I can set up the new tig set up , so I've started to make a three legged stool.
my temporary bench will be 850mm high so I need to decide the height for the stool . So here goes. An old wind up jack from the car boot for a quid.

did I say it was going to be height adjustable. there going to be some metal butchery going on so if your sensitive read no further , youv'e been warned !


I couldn't get the cog to budge so I welded the saddle and set to with heat and a hammer

and it was loose. it's going to give me about 110mm of adjustment

next some 6mm plate ( overkill but it was out me scrap pile I've savin up ) cut ( cordless grinder and cuuting disc ) drilled and counter sunk a plate for the seat using me pillar drill for the first time so much easier than using a cordless.


next drill out a plate to put the cog in and cut three lats at 120

the rest was cut of with the plasma , not as easy as you think freehand


Next butchering the cog with an angry grinder so the plate would fit and I use the word FIT in the vaguely !

I'm going to put a washer and split pin on the end of the screw to stop it fully winding out. Now need to decide on what to use for the top a bit of oak would be nice . and an old portable pipe bender has donated it's self for the legs.

More overkill they are heavy lumps more chopping and welding ( of a fashion ) to come.

Looking great.

Lots of height adjustment is good, not all parts are welded close to table surface.
Think I have 300mm adjustment on the one I made and I have used it to it's both extents

Three legs better than four, will always be rock steady even if the floor isn't even.

I based mine on a length of 24mm studding. There is a nut welded to the top of the base tube and then another one (turned down a bit to suit) welded (through holes) inside the tube a few inches down - that way the studding doesn't have any tendency to rock around in the base. I made a locknut lever for it but never use it. Originally it had four legs and castors but it would always rock at the critical moment and drive me around the bend - three legs is definitely the way to go but the footprint has to be bigger for it to be stable.

I use one of those bar stools with the ram fitted - instant height adjustment at the pull of a lever!

Tractor seat is good. They don’t melt.

Wide base is good. They also don’t bounce very well

Much of the 'stuff' I've made for the workshop has been three-legged; vice stand and a stool... though that one is too high for welding and the lower one I made for welding is on castors and has four legs.

In fact, you've just inspired me to cannibalise the four legged one and make a three-legged one with castors - thanks @roblane65 !

There is a picture on here somewhere of a Tig bench, I forget now who made it but I hope to be able to make one like it. It is an upright, hinged and a triangular frame protruding from the side. I would bolt it to one of the legs of my bench but I would also split it so it folded out double hinged.I have a big sturdy Acme threaded bar and nut for the seat post. The seat itself doesn't need to be much.

I will try to find a pic.

Here you go, a video. But I would double fold it so you are not stuck with just the one arc:

Frankenstool continues I had a bit of time late this afternoon so I bodged away

firstly a board with center point and and blocks at about 350mm dia , next up three very accurately cut legs ( not ) around 600mm long 30 ish dia.



I leveled the board and with a plumb bob tacked the legs in place then did some excellent welding , I wasn't going to show the weld around the top of the cog !

I then re checked with the plumb bob and hey presto No where near ! so I pressed on regardless.

next was to make some braces for between the legs 25mm hole saw ( I didn't have a 30mil ) and some 25 x 25 angle drilled and cut to three equal pieces


all wedged and tacked into place . I didn't really clean anthing up much as I was on a misson.

theres welding to do and cleaning up , but behold the stool
right now it stands between 620 -720mm without a top . I'm probably into about 4 1/2 hours so far.
two things I've a decent true colour mask but I'm struggling to see properly when welding and I s**t my self when the gas supply blew of the back of mig

Also remember to turn the gas back on before you start welding just a tip there.

A small ledge of treadplate would be in order for the front brace.
When I sit on a stool I like to rest my feet on.

That might be an idea not to sure about the height at present but I can always cut it down if needed.
