Threadlock on wheel nuts

I worked on some fixturing applying the rod cap to the connecting rod in an engine, where
the nut was hand spun down close, a special cylinder was applied to grip the threads, pull the stud
to specified tension, and then the assembler could turn a little socket to spin the nut down the rest of the way
with this pull cylinder on top and around the nut.
Direct tensioning, no torque problems.

My main concern is rusted threads. I have always used copperslip and never had one come loose but I suspect threadlock would be the best of both Worlds !

i put a dab of copperslip on all my wheel nuts and have done for the last 40 years even used it on my stockcars never had one loosen off yet that wasnt suposed to

The problem with using copperslip etc is not so much that the nuts come loose - it is that you decrease the friction required to tighten it to the correct bolt tension.
So now if you torque the wheel nut up to 100ft/lb it could actually be the equivalent of torqueing it up to 140 or 150 ft/lb dry.

It all depends on what the manufacturer has specified - for example some ARP headstuds must be torqued wet with a light oil.
But wheelnuts are always, IME, dry torque figures.

Given that Kwickfit type crew like to impact them until they bleed, chances are probably a small amount of overtightening is unlikely to cause a huge problem, but there is an increased risk of snapping a stud nonetheless.

Thats bolt tensioning by stretching the bolt, and screw the nut down hand tight, let tension off, very common on big stuff.

my mate had his brakes done and went to take his alloy wheels off 2 days later to no avail he ended up buying one of those large breaker bars from machine mart and even then struggled . god knows who they put to do them

You decrease tightening torque for plated screws compared to black.

I have lost a wheel, found one loose - both due to not torquing them in the first place.

I recently (last winter) kept having the nearside front wheel of my Alfa come lose - the only wheel I'd put a smidgeon of copper grease on . .

I put antisieze in/on the locating bore/spigot and on the mounting face of alloys or steels - had all on once getting winter wheels back off. Loose bolts, drop the clutch - took a few goes to get it loose.

As for threadlock. Just no.

I have never experienced a wheel nut rusting on if they did why would you need loctite, my interest is classic cars, you could always buy stainless wheel nuts.

Copperslip is the work of the devil, go near it and everything from one end of the workshop to the other will have in on somehow. Having said that a smear of copperslip on the hub center, a spot of oil on the threads, torque correctly and bobs your uncle.I'm not too bothered about torque differences as have you seen the bar they give you in the emergency toolkit, no way of accurately measuring torque with one of those.

Must admit I use a little copper slip on my old cars. But I do torque the wheel nuts by feel rather than using a torque wrench. The threads are always gummed up by rust, gunk and previous abuse however much they are cleaned which would also influence the torque wrench settings.

At work on modern cars I use the torque wrench and no lube. There's liability in there and the threads are perfectly good so it makes sense to do that.

i did once have a wheel fall off but that was because I forgot to tighten it. I suspect I am seen as a bit excentric for putting a bit of masking tape on the driver door saying torque wheels when I have them off.

I can't imagine the 5/16 alloy wheel nuts on my Dolomite Sprint would have survived copperease and tightening by feel .. . or threadlock and undoing with a scaffold pole!
