Thread Tap Storage

Hi folks,

what do you use to store taps that haven't got a box? I've a few odd whit and BSP etc ones that haven't got boxes and want to store them a bit more organised than the little plastic box they're in at the moment, I was thinking a nylon/delrin board with holes in or a half round again with blind holes so they don't fall through, but it's where to store it, currently all my drills, loose taps, holesaws, mag drill cutters and die stocks/tap handles are in a metal suitcase jobby which is fine except it has to be stored flat.

Fishing float boxes make good tap and die boxes. Cut into some closed cell foam stops them knocking into each other

Something like this is ideal, I just bought some used 15-drawer ones. Make some drawer dividers from strips of plastic and glue them in with hot glue.

Do a search for 'Rolykit', they're often available on eBay and are just brilliant storage solutions.

I used to use a drawer system like that but it wastes a lot of space

At work we use Lin bins one for each thread type for the ones that aren't part of a kit easy enough to find the correct one

I use the 15 drawer ones too, but only 'cos the local Staples were closing down and flogging them off very cheap so I bought 3.

Funny I bought my Bisley cabinets so I could rid my walls of Lin Bins

Langy: I built my benches with the drawer units in mind so I managed to accommodate them well. There is some space behind but I am utilising that so it's not wasted. So far I am very pleased.

Just to add to the previous great ideas for tap @ die store, I have used a draw system I got from B&Q. It's supposed to be used for buttons or similar. Stands at around 300x250x200, with narrow draws (see through) which can be partitioned to suit. I used lengths of pipe insulation to provide snug "nest" for each tap etc. Works for me.

I just pop mine in a cardboard box. Try to lay them out so that they're not rammed up against each other, and also stagger them so that they're shank to stem, as in alternately upside down.

chuck mine in a sweet tin, and then swish them around a bit to find one that fits the hole, not bothered about the thread, then i search for a bolt to fit the new thread, its quite simple

DrNik.... I've worked in too many workshops like that...!! Found some neat little plastic boxes on the bay I'm going to try when I get the workshop clear enough to actually get at the box my taps are in atm...!

I'm the same as DrNik but I got all my taps handed down to me from my grandad who was a marine engineer and they were all kept in tobacco tins lol never really seen a reason to organize them into anything else :S

My life is far too short to have everything in order, I can go in my workshop and know where everything is, perhaps keeping things in order is preparing for when you get old and becoming forgetful.,
Then again I was just thinking what order do you put them in, coarse then fine thread,increasing in metric with imperial slotted in the gaps, decisions decisions
