I have to confess I didn't think that thread had reached the point where it needed to be deleted but that's by the by. It's Malcolm's prerogative to delete as he sees fit.

Malcolm's also right to say there's no point pointing the finger of blame. We have all, in some small way, been complicit in creating the situation we find ourselves in. Even the bankers are not entirely to blame. Yes, they may have made a monumental c0ck up but it seems to have been readily forgotten that in the years preceding they made this country (and themselves) a fortune. And as for blaming Maggie, well I shall defend her to the hilt!

How can you defend the indefensible? I remember the riots!

This is turning into a political thread lol. Problem is to much welfare makes folks lazy, they wont take a low paid job because they can get more on welfare. The immegrants dont suffer from this and will take two jobs if the need arises to make ends meet. We have become lazy as a nation

scarecrow, Gordon brown once claim he had abolished boom and bust. rather idiotic statement if you ask me. For two reasons really one you can never be sure what the rest of the world will be doing in several years time, being as it is a global economy. Any downturn in the majority is felt else where in the world. China now looks like its growth might slow to zero. The other reason was his economic plans never added up in the first place, so it really was a matter of time before the train came of the tracks.

now theres a question, if we had been in the euro, exports would have been far more favorable, so industry may have stood up better over the last few years..... an impossible one to Gage, however....

Thanks, Si! Just because someone wasn't there doesn't mean they can't comment on it! What would historians do if that was the case? Come to think of it, what do historians do anyway?

Maggie didn't destroy manufacturing. Maggie destroyed the Unions (at least for a while). It's certainly true that her policies were confrontational and polarising but a lot of what she set out to do (reduce state interference, reduce the size of the 'welfare state') is relevant even today.

Anyway. Arguments (or even 'discussions') involving Maggie are often, like her policies, fairly divisive so it's probably best not to get started....

BTW, Simon, at 21 I shall assume that 'kid' is a relative term

On the other hand without the ability to effectively regulate (read devalue) our own currency we could easily have been in a worse situation than we are now. Look at Greece; national debt satnds at 94% of GDP! Like you say, impossible to gauge which way it might have swung...

Who started this green/global warming scaremongering, because they didn't want the miners unions disrupting the government, and needed to convince the public the country should move from coal power stations to nuclear? (do a search on google)
Who brought out the poll tax?
And yes I can remember the protests/riots, and I was out of work as a carpenter for a few years.
Prior to being laid off, I was working in the day, carpentry and a bouncer in clubs 7 nights a week, and still couldn't get a mortgage on a 1 up 1 down!!!!

I watched a documentry a while ago called "the great global warming scandall"
(Summut similar to that anyway) Maggie is responsible for that, included in the demise of the mines and miners

Milk for school children! Are you seriously telling me that, decades on, the abolition of milk for school children is one of the worst things Thatcher did?! If that is the case she's positively saintly in comparison to today's lot.

Who benefited from the sale of the national companies? The shares in those companies were sold to ordinary people and the dividends shared out amongst the shareholders. Privatisation opened the way for competition in the markets and rid companies of unsuccessful management. Result: greater competition in the markets and the removal of a heavy burden fro the taxpayer. And if they weren't hers to sell, whose were they? Those companies were created by a democratically elected government and later sold by a democratically elected government.

She was, IMO, quite right to push the country towards nuclear power. Even today it reamins, again IMO, the only sensible way to generate the electricity we require. I'm afraid I haven't read about Thatcher starting the green issue so won't comment on it until I've read up a bit.

Poll tax. Well there in lay her undoing. She made a mistake and paid for it. It was scrapped shortly after so why worry about it?

Like I say, she certainly polarises opinion!
