Everning all.
Would you root and cap it, or v the edges and do it in one hit, or something else
Ive welded sheet like this before but just wonder how others choose to go about it.
I'd cut the plate slightly small to leave a 2mm gap between new and old all the way round and weld it both sides. Nice and hot will give you a neat slightly convex weld.
I'd gap it to 2mm, leave a 2mm land and vee prep to 60 degrees. To make sure your penetration is correct, use some scrap with the same prep to get your volts right but do it for the same positions you'll be welding in (the vertical ups should be no more than 18v, ish. Any other positions, higher volts, but probably not much more than 21v). It doesn't matter whether you do it in one hit or two, so long as you get full pen on the root.
Would you really bother with a V prep Si? 6mm isnt thick, and a gap gives enough to burn the edges in and get really good penetration. Welded from oot side would be fine, both sides in an ideal world.
