Thought Regarding 6mm sheet

Everning all.

I am going to be welding some plates on an old boat after it had a survey done and showed it needs 6 plates 200mm X 300mm and 2 plates 300mm X 600mm these need to be cut out and new sheet welded in not plated on the outside.

Would you root and cap it, or v the edges and do it in one hit, or something else

Ive welded sheet like this before but just wonder how others choose to go about it.

I'd cut the plate slightly small to leave a 2mm gap between new and old all the way round and weld it both sides. Nice and hot will give you a neat slightly convex weld.

funny over the last few years mines gone up in value about 12k

It would be nice to do it like that. But the welding is on a old working narrowboat and where the smaller plates are needed is actually behind the knees meaning access is restricted to the inside.

yep got a lot of old kit in me workshop that's worth more in scrap than I paid for it. but its decent kit and earns a few nickers.

Make sure your insert plates have radiused corners to help prevent cracks. Use low hydrogen electrodes and take plenty of care with fit up as gaps that are either too large or too small will be a big headache.

my wife used to know the woman that owned nutfield many years ago, as for Raymond don't know how they got away with calling it a restoration.

I new the owners of nutfield prior to the charity buying her. Some of the old welding on it is really bad! i would be interested who had attacked it before.

As for raymond I would say it more of a replica exhibiting so origional features

I only got involved with the charity earlyer this year so notfully upto scratch on there historys. Looking forword to doing the welding work though, helping keep the history floating
