They have it here in NZ, it’s really useful for earthquake and tsunami warnings though the shrill tone of the thing never fails to terrify me!

I think its a good idea
It will suffer like a govt projects, over budget and under deliver

The tinfoil hat brigade will be going nuts even though its in the terms you agree to when you first use a new phone

However, if it saves even 1 life it will be worth it

Luckily were in Lincolnshire so it will be years before it gets to us, runs off to find the tinfoil.....

Only need a reliable mobile signal 1st, Lincolnshire may be flat - hence flooding - but carp mobile signal, village up the road none of there smart meters work.

it only works when you update your phone or you have installed new updates onto your phone

otherwise it aint being installed on your phone

a waste of time and money if you aks me whats the point in it they cant even detect problematic people causing loads of trouble in the past this is gonna make no difference at all

Can’t see what difference it’ll make having it or not

If you don’t update your phone it’ll gradually just become useless I would think? I have to do mine to keep apps working and I don’t have many. Just bank and such but they require updates

I don't think this has anything to do with apps or updates. It uses features built into the GSM spec and implemented in the phone OS.

I was in holiday (Vancouver I think) they did a test and me and all the tourists in the café I was in wondered what was going on when all our phone's started making siren noises until you acknowledge the alert.

It's a good Idea, very secure and one day might be life saving.

That’s what I thought. I looked at the .gov site after Gazs comment and it needs a certain version of os to work. Not sure if that’s just to display the messages or what.

My phone is a great big Alcatel which I've had for going on 10 years and the simple reason I got it was because I couldn't see the screen on piddly little mobiles .

I've never updated or installed anything on it as I genuinely have no idea how to, so whatever makes it respond to the alarm is obviously already in it.
