Yeh I thought that when I had seen it a few years before, Its like they had to make the path, -----to make the path! mind you it looks like it was not planned , it just happened.
It does not look wide enough to have used donkeys because how would they turn round and what about the others coming up they could not pass, maybe they just threw them off when they got there !!
the other thing is how did they drill into the rock to place the 45deg brackets and then how did they get the welding equipment there ?

Its called el caminto del rey or the kings little pass.
I believe it was made as access for workers to reach key points in the mountains to operate valves and gates. They constucted some kind of sluce system for water catchment as far as I know.
It used to open to public but after too many accidents I believe the spannish authorities closed it. Apparently still do able though. I would love to do it myself.
