This spool gun any good?

Anyone know if this particular gun is reasonable for the price?

My main concern really is in the description : Rated Voltage: 12VDC Rated Current: 0.5A Range of voltage: 2-12VDC.

Is this suitable for my Sealey 150?

Those figures are probably for the motor in the gun, so you would need a variable 2-12VDC supply for it.

Welding current seems to be 90A

The 12v and 0.5A will be the rating of the drive motor that turns the wire spool. Your Sealey would need to output 2-12v variable to control the motor speed, or you'd need a separate variable voltage power supply. If the Sealey doesn't have the necessary accessory socket you may have some electrickery to do.

I have no idea if it's any good or not, but I bought one on a whim a few months ago. It wouldn't fit directly on to my old SIP 180, so I clipped off the plug and wired it in with spade connectors.

The wire fed, and it sparked a bit but I didnt really persue it any further than that as I sold the SIP soon after and bought an Esab which it WON'T fit onto!

Connectng to the Euro socket on my machine, would the speed not be adjusted via the control on the front panel? How would I adjust the speed for it otherwise?

Also would I only be limited to 90 amps welding current, or would it damage the gun if I set my maching to a full 150 amps?

The drive motor has a separate feed as well as the welding current cable and the torch trigger.

It says 90A at 35% so you should be able to crank it up higher than that but for a progressively shorter duration.

You could measure the variable voltage going to existing wire feed motor, if it covers 2-12VDC use those wires to power the spool gun motor.
A neater solution would be a switch to swap between motors and a 2 pin socket on the front panel.

Just to get it straight in my mind (blonde moment), In the pic there is the euro connector. Coming off it looks like a smaller coil of wire, is that the wire for the motor feed? I understand that I may have to wire that bit in seperately, would I need to perform any extra wiring with the euro connector, or should it work ok once I have wired in the motor feed?

I will check the original motor voltages before I commit to buying the gun. If it checks out, the switch would be a neat idea, thanks.

The euroconnector should just work as fitted, supplying weld current, gas and trigger on spoolgun.

My internal wire feed motor seems to be feb by 4v(min setting) to 19v(max setting)

Would you guys say that its too much voltage for the gun? wouldnt want to accidently burn the guns motor out

A bit of Ohms law calculation should produce a resistor to drop the max voltage by 7V, just put it in line with the socket to the spool gun motor.

Or put a mark on the wire speed knob at 12V reading, you probably won't be able to weld if wire speed on max due to too much wire coming out!

I think I need a little enlightenment here,When using a spool gun does it have to syc with your feed roller speed so that in effect you have a Push-pull arrangement or does the spool gun do all the work with the feed rollers disconnected and left open???

A spool gun carries it's own wire (on a spool) so machine feeder not required.

You may be confusing it with a push/pull system that uses a motorised torch which does have to be sync'd with wire feeder.
