The old recipe Hammerite needed their special thinners to spray it, if you used white spirit or celly it went lumpy & wouldn’t mix. Last time I used some I used white spirit to clean the brushes, but that was the new stuff. I try to avoid using it if I can, I find the “paint on rust” a complete myth.
Hammerite thinners/brush cleaner is Acetone,
Auto paint shops will sell it, about £15 for 5 litres.
New AND improvedHow can it be called Hammerite, if it is not the same product
Is Xylene the same as Acetone
Xylene is an organic compound having the chemical formula (CH3)2C6H4
While Acetone is an organic compound having the chemical formula (CH3)2CO.
The key difference between xylene and acetone is that xylene is a cheap and less toxic solvent,
Whereas acetone is an expensive and more toxic solvent.
That was how I realised Hammerite Thinner/Brush Cleaner, was the same as Acetone, from the smell,Different smells between the two. Acetone to me has a very distinctive pong.
it sprays on nicely using celly thinners . give it light coats and it comes out looking metalic without all the dimples i have stacks of it and it gets used on cabinets and machinery to keep them clean and rust free . i have been getting it over the years from autojumbles and pay less than quarter price for biggish tinsHammerite doesn’t ‘hammer’ any more. It also doesn’t cover properly. It either sags because you have to lay it on thickly or shows gaps if you try and get a good thin coat on.
