Try a 3mm rod, you'll see a difference & keep the plates really tight, they seem to opening up when you are welding, tack them or use more clamps

As a pure hobbyist, more rod is gonna have to wait as I just ordered 5kg of A18, plus some 4043 and some 316. I'm all out of budget for a little bit
