Was reading an article on welding thick panels for submarines this morning.

They mentioned that the first pass against a ceramic backing rod was the "route run", I always thought it was the "root pass". Is this US vs UK terminology or perhaps a typo on the article?
An interesting point to note is that they use fluxed filler and argon/CO2 shielding gas in their MIG welding of the panels.
