Well, after saying thats it for tonight I went up into the roof space in the garage which is where this valve is conveniently (not) located. I just unclipped the motor from the valve. Something whirred inside, I put it back on and the heating has now fired up.
Its a mid position actuator BGMVSP-23. Looks very similar to this - https://www.screwfix.com/p/drayton-mid-position-valve-actuator/40818 which screwfix sell and one of the Q&As ask if it is a direct replacement for the BGMVSP-23... They sell new motors for the Drayton... I wonder if they will fit the BG model?
Weird its started working though. I will test it more tomorrow. Its probably on borrowed time even if it does keep working.

So just to update on this, everything seemed to be behaving after I had taken the 3 way motor out and it clicked and whirred and seemed to reset itself. BUT, I have been sat in the room by the boiler working today and had the heating on at times. I noticed that it is clicking on and off quite a lot with no real time between the on and off. Normally, it seems to heat, get to temp and then stop heating for a while as it circulates the hot water until the water cools and then it switches back on. Today it heats, clicks off and immediately turns back on again - that doesn't seem normal? I have tried adjusting the thermostat on the boiler but it makes no difference to this behaviour.
I am not around for a few weeks after today but will get someone out to look at this all properly. Its an old Potterton Profile 60e. Its well over 16 years old I think but has been a reliable unit. It is due a service anyway but any ideas what might be wrong? I cant link this to the microswitches in the valve motor in my head but it could be them? Should I just replace that in any case?

yep if the boiler thermostats going on and off all the time the water isnt circulating fast enough to clear the hot water in the boiler and its cutting out .check the speed of the pump if it has 3 settings on it and turn it up if it isnt on maximum .if its 2 fast you will hear it spinning the water round and can be turned down feel the pipe under the 3 port valve and see how hot it is. if the water and heating are both calling for heat the 2 output pipes should all be the same heat as the input from boiler if everythings flowing properly

Managed to catch it in the act. But domt know how to post the video!! BS posted though and thats what its doing - boiler stat clicking on and off.
Bugger. This is exactly what its doing. The pump is on 3 already. Always has been and its never done this before. Do the pumps gradually fail or just work/not work?

have you tried it on water only and see if it does it , leave heating off and heat the water. once its hot and cuts off on the tank thermostat turn up the thermostat on the heating then see how it goes check all the rads are getting hot and bleed the radiators if needed. when its on heating check the slider lever it should be free to move both ways loose if the motor is holding the valve i fully open
The levers and change over seem to be working as they should I think. I havent bled the rads for a fair while (cant find the key to do it tonight) - would that make any difference? I havent checked them all but they do get hot.
It seemed to do it less on HW than on CH (I think!) but I did notice it do it once but the CH may have been on at the same time.

Unlikely, more a weak pump, blocked tee or if you have any sort of air separator it will be that
Thanks. I have a homecare visit booked now (but not till 28th April!) I will try not to use it much until then!
What would an air seperator look like? Not an expansion vessel?
Hmmm. Would there be one as standard? I cant picture anything like that from memory and i am away for a few weeks now (was only up there for work)
ETA - I have just looked them up and I cant picture anything like that on the system that I have seen.
