I've used a FLIR thermal imager on various jobs, funky bit of kit. Got some amusing pics of guys at work taking drinks! It's surprising how much the skin temperature varies across just your face.

I worked in a factory a few years ago and there were some guys in servicing the ovens (used to bake lead plates covered in oxide paste's)

they had some pretty high tech thermal imaging kit and spent more time messing around than doing their job, they had a quite interesting pic saved though, where 2 jugs of water were placed on a table, one hot and one very cold. the person then had one warm hand and one cold hand. the warm hand went in the cold water and vice versa and a pic was taken. looked quite strange to see the heat differences between the waters and the hands

I've had a FLIR scout for a year or two.....it's pretty good.
Very handy in daylight to spot stuff hidden in undergrowth and squirrels and pigeons in trees.
It's much better at night when all the surroundings have cooled down, you can easily see heat sources a couple of hundred yards away.

Use a flir at work and fantastic bit of kit. One of the other site i have started working at have a fluke one looking forward to having a go with that as the software is supposed to be very clever

I had a thermal imaging camera home from college a couple of years back, it was about 5k's worth of camera and it was next to useless, the lecturer in college reckoned if it wasn't a flir you were wasting your time. I went across the road one cold winters night when we had the heating on and i tried to see if i could find out where the heat was escaping from and i might as well have been looking down the plug hole in the sink for all i could see.
Thermal cameras are used a lot in maintenance, overheating bearings, motors, electrical connections, bad boiler/pipework insulation etc are a doddle to diagnose.

ive heard good things about the fluke units, never used one though.

would quite like one for the reasons wyn has mentioned, but the price has to come way down before I buy one lol.

We use the one at work to find gas leaks on SF6 system very effective

We use them at work also.. great for locating casualties in house fires where you cant see your hand in front of your face. Also good for finding hotspots when you think the fire is out but more cooling is needed.
What I have noticed over the years is how small they have become...our latest ones are the size and weight of a small cordless drill. Excellent bit of kit...

You can get the Flir i3 for about £800 and alter a couple of files in the internal flash to upgrade it to the 320x200 Flir i7 which is worth significantly more.

A mate of mine uses an ex-mil unit in combination with his NV for splatting foxes. I think he discusses it's use in his book. (not sure if I can put a link up?)
