You have to remember that all the gritting gripes are blaming a bunch of blokes who are by now, basically, knackered. They've been working every day since new years.

Poor lads, going to need 14 days off now on full pay . Its whats expected in times like this from our councils, bit of graft with an extra push.

Reminds me when I worked offshore, 12 hour shifts, every day, weekends included, longest trip I did was 16 weeks…

Now you can compare your time off afterwards and your pay packet to the council guys.

We were the poor boys of the oil field, seismic survey. For the hours we actually spent at work I could earn more with a normal shore side job. But it was the six months a year free time to do as we liked that I was after.

Same scenario as always, with everyone though.

They mock, make out "their dog is blacker", complain etc., whilst these blokes are out there trying their damnedest. Being either at work else sleeping, risking having an accident each time they're out, (due to them being out specifically to try & counter dangerous conditions, hence putting themselves at risk), driving primarily at night which requires more concentration, having to deal with the traffic numpties, etc., etc., etc.

The decisions the council hierarchy make have nowt to do with the poor sods at the bottom who are doing the graft.

I was a back deck mechanic, working on maintaining the gear we dragged around behind the ship, and also operating the huge air compressors that powered it. And looking after the workboats.

When I was at sea, I did 196 days without setting foot on dry land on a lpg tanker, used to do12 hour days in middle east heat, down in the engine room. When I first started offshore in the North Sea I worked in drilling 12 hour days plus over time, much of that was spent actually drilling, or tripping pipe. After that I moved over to operations, new projects during commissioning and start up, first one we were doing 21 days of 16 hours. Down in Angola it was usually only 15 hours for 28 days, except during shutdowns etc, when a bit more was expected. Last shutdown I did was 42 days of 16 hours, in charge of all the work as site controller. Yes it paid better than spreading salt, which made it worth while.

My son in law is a farmer, with a fencing business, and a snow plough contract. Only time he has a day off is if he goes away on holiday.

From what I have seen not sure council worker and graft really go in the same sentence, as for the hierarchy they are responsible for the culture. Many couldnt cope in the real world.

1925 or 2025? The weathers due to improve next week so took the opportunity to get some photos whilst we can. Every lay-by/car park on the main road was filled with walkers/sledgers so we had to come further away from the hills than I would’ve liked. There will be another opportunity I’m sure.
