Sure, these are recalls - safety related issues, not general reliability or parts defects, I know a MT at Toyota, he's no more or less busy than a VWG, Ford or M-B MT in diagnosing problems.

Difficult jobs on cars is nothing new, the original repair time for a classic Mini water pump covered removing the subframe, engine and gearbox for the first year or so of production before a split radiator cowling was introduced. They also suffered with wear in the steering rack N/S bush that was originally made of felt , again a subframe out job , a ten bob tool enabled the job to be done with just removing the track rod . BMC 1800 clutch job was supposed to take around 12 hours , again removing the engine and box , but, as I discovered when I was just out of my apprenticeship I could do it in less than 5 hours. Later VAG EGR valves can sometimes be done without removing the subframe and exhaust but it’s not a job I would even consider without use of a 2 post lift

I asked some friends in France who were the kind to go driving through Africa on their holidays if they had £100k (mid 2010s) to walk into a dealership and buy any vehicle to go "over landing" in what would it be? Big Toyota fans for the most part and they almost without fail said a Range Rover or Discovery.
The reasoning being the Toyota was less likely to have an issue but if it did it would be "terminal" and not readily fixable without a dealer. The Land Rover was more likely to throw up faults etc., but it would go into a limp mode but crucially carry on.
Rather aptly the ones of us who'd travelled from the UK for this event consisted of a 200Tdi 90, 300Tdi 110, 2.5 P38 diesel, and an early 2000s Toyota Land Cruiser.
The 200Tdi lost the clutch half way through a forest stage (he'd fitted a booster before leaving), that consisted of bleeding it and topping it up in the middle of the forest. The 300Tdi didn't have an issue. The P38 didn't have an issue.
The Land Cruiser made it back to the UK two months later on the back of a low loader with failed brakes. Even the main dealer in France couldn't find the fault. Turned out the high pressure pump on the ABS had failed, why that resulted in zero brakes I don't quite understand but it was the fault.

I run a TD5 Defender, for all its faults, I know I can pretty much do any job on it: starter motor in well under an hour, I do have a Hawkeye for diagnosis, handy when I have had the odd ABS issue. Parts are cheap enough I keep most wear and tear parts as spares on the shelf. As all the parts that rust have been galvanised, it really is just maintenance and wear and tear work, now owned for 20 years, never broken down.

Pretty much all modern vehicles are ridiculously engineered with silly design choices focused around optimising efficiency, economy, packaging and cost.
Maintenance and reliability are simply not a consideration.
I believe Toyota still currently make a fully mechanical land cruiser – mechanical fuel pump, no electronics. Popular with those working in TWSH.
You can start it by jacking up and manually spinning a rear wheel while in gear if you have no battery or starter.
I can’t imagine there is much else available on the market today that would compare.

The 1.9...terrible job. the M9R 2L is easier as its on the frontStarter on my Vauxhall Vario is also in a stupid place, took me two days to strip half the engine, replace it & put everything back on.
On my aging VW LT is a half hour job, all the bolts are just there right in front of you as are the electrical connections!
The amount of vehicles with inaccessible parts that are bound to wear out is unbelievable.

It used to be but what they reckoned it was swapped over to a certain extent for late 2000s and onwards vehicles.

I used to run 'Adventure trips' to North Africa 2006-2010, probably five or six trips a year, from easy Morocco ten day trips, to Tunisia two-week events and month long Libya marathons. Most were LR vehicles, but not exclusively, everything ranging from Series III, lightweights, 90's, 110's, a 127 (plus trailer!), Disco 1,2,3 &4's, even a couple of L322's an Range Rover Sport's and a Freelander 2. There were 'also rans' in the shape of Toyota's and Mitsubishi's, in all that time, there was one breakdown - Mitsubishi water pump failed (the one pictured below, accidentally in Algeria) and a 110 that damaged the rear prop (removed, slung in the back and 'repaired' by the first 'bush mechanic' with a welder we found. There were many other issues - all related to driver competence / confidence and ability or otherwise to read and follow the pre-trip packing list....

People do get offended when its suggested that land rovers are poorly designed and unreliable.
