Hi Gordon, don't worry about it I will try my thing, just need to get a few bearings.

I can get the angle grinder out with a slitting disk and cut it, that’s actually cleaner than a plasma cut, less edge clean up as well, it is just I have to do it at the back of the kit car just outside the garage.

All I am trying to do is find a solution that minimises the noise to the neighbours, because cutting sheet makes a row. I do not have issues with any neighbour that I am aware of, they all speak with me, but I am conscious of the noise I can make. Many of them are retired, semi retired etc and are spending time in their gardens as the nicer weather is arriving. If I can make the simple cutter to fit the overarm of the mill and it allows me to cut slices around 450 to 500mm I will be happy, I can do it with no noise have a clean cut etc.

I have managed to fit my petrol compressor inside my inner insulated room with an exhaust running to the outside. The air line is clipped to the wall and runs to the CNC cutter around 8 metres in length of 10mm pipe. So my plasma is now fixed on a wall closest to my house. Move a few metres from the garage when running the compressor and the noise is nothing but a murmur. Shut the garage doors and run the plasma again within a few feet of the garage the noise is noticeable but not loud, stood next to it when cutting and you need ear defenders. You read that many tales on here about having issues with next door, it is just not a situation I would like to get in. I did have a bad neighbour at a previous house, these are like pure gold.

The initial question was basically asking anyone if they thought the idea with a bearing as a test out would work, I will try out out anyway, if it does yea! It it does not, then, Oh well.
I will post pictures and results as I go along, but I need the bearings first.

Why???? The machine is capable of cutting a 20mm slot at around 20mm deep, or slice 125mm wide a few mm deep on a block. It's all about speed. Why would a single slice in 2mm steel sheet bother it?

It normally cuts as material is fed slowly into a spinning multi tooth cutter, the actual cut per tooth is quite small. As the blades blunt the cutting forces are going to increase as well.

im not saying im right but have you had a quick chat with the nextdoors and such and see if they have a problem with you doing a bit of work

generaly work between 8am and 6 pm is classed as work time doing it every day yes comes in to it a few times a week dont think they can realy complain

1/2 nights a week again not realy deams complain to the council

but will depend on noise

years ago with old next door we had a problem they did complain we make to much noise had this problem we had moved in to a house that needed lots of work and add the fact im a bit ocd yes over a few years we did make a fair bit of noise not every night i was not knocking down the house

when i was young did not think about thing like this but do now and find asking questions first do we make to much noise you will get a reply off all of the people round here they got no problem and i said if one night its not wanted just pop round any say keep it down no problem if they come round every night i did some thing i might have to say some thing but a bit of give and take goes a long way

if you make a bit of noise now and again do what you can for any people next door as most of us do even as little as let it be known you can take a parsel to parsel people if your cutting your grass if the nextdoor is need of a cut when you got your petrol mower out just run round the front garden fix a step when you make up a mix of cement got a bit left over or just make a little more when they need some thing its what i do

i have in my last house have been there for 15 years an most round thereknow if they had a problem they can come knocking water leak pc problem door not working right electrics not working most are easy problems if not you can even just give a little advice that will make them feel a bit better

i do not do this just to keep the nextdoor happy just do as i do like helping i know it helps any one

one thing to rember if you get to the problem of the compaints to the council or such of noise or such

ask to have mediation between both partys (this is something my other half found out from looking on the web years ago when we had the only problem we have ever had and did ask when we offered to do this and have someone one talk between us and them and a third party and them in a differnt place away from our homes )

this is not something well known and does work and if one party does not agree to have go to it to try to make amendments the courts will throw the case out of court as they where not shown to try to make amends

Adrian one thing to consider is the amount of (or lack there of) in the outer of a bearing **. I know it will all depend on what size of bearing you can get but I would consider using the inner of a bearing as there is more meat in it and the hole through the middle has more metal!
With either the inner or outer to get the cutting edge you could have them surface ground to remove the radius on the corners. If you get both sides done and make the bearing ring removable (rather than pressed on) then you could flip the ring when edge dulls. Also think there should be a clearance between the two cutters which is dependent on metal thickness (don't assume they should touch) You might need to refer to a guillotine manual for some clearances.
Note also IF the cutter fails in cut then it is likely to shatter rather than just dull so don't forget yer goggles

I see around 4 neighbours regularly weekend and Mondays & Tuesdays, one comes to have a look ( ex engineer) another is a in the boiler industry as an inspector so has an interest but has mentioned they could hear my compressor running, ( before I changed things around ) thought it was some form of pump (it is). The immediate neighbour we help out with small things and in fact has my Adam and Eve metal piece on her garage wall. I was working or trying to on ones Jeep the other week and he has passed things on to me. There is a new'ish couple that tends not to speak to many others and a few of the ones a few houses away now have young kids, again we have traded things between us as our kids have outgrown slides and swings, So I am not feared about the council, have never had any complaints here, and that included me building my kit car.

I stop work before 9 pm whenever in the garage, any time in there after that is just me sweeping and tidying up.
But I see the noise I make, as an occasional annoyance, even if they do not mention it to me, so I will do all I can to minimise, keep it in the garage type thing, besides it's fun to make things.

Was the arbor bothered at all by swaging?

Hi Mike, I am completely unsure what type of bearings I can get yet, but I get your points,, I have some white grinding wheels that I think should be able to grind the bearings, I was just thinking of taking the radios off the edges of the bearings and yes I agree the inner race would have the most meat and if they are taper bearings then I think the better for me. I know that my bench sheer blades just touch and they will do a few mm thick, but they possibly should not, I will have to check my old Engineering handbooks to see what they should be.
