wifeys car has knackered tires on just the same, its only done 8 thousand miles from new but is 8 years old
her last car did the same

do you not find that the older car springs hardly ever broke even though there was plenty of potholes
i try to miss them and go over speed bumps real slow in winter as cold weather on the steel makes them more brittle and prone to snap, ive had about 5 go on me in the last 20 years

well the wifes were the same and i check them regular and it has the low pressure gauge on the dashboard that has never come on

having designed automotive components for 2 large manufacturers for 20 years, its become a race to the bottom,
have had sound design decisions challenged because of cost. knowing that the penny pinching will cause issues.
The 2lt transit engine issue was a perfect example of going for the lowest price.
Old hydraulic chain tensioner was about £90 the new cheep one was only £47,
@ just over £5k for a customer engine replacement the bill stood at over £118 million for all the engines that had suffered a sudden and unscheduled disassembly with the chain in the bottom of the engine when i left in 2017, and they were using wet belts in the FOX and Dragon engines even after VAG and GM had all ready had recalls!!

They were Bridgestone. DOT was 3819.
They were the OE tyres.

I don't believe they were under inflated. There was no mention of any problems with punctures and no tpms light on the dash.

I put a set of Yokohama AT tyres on the truck years ago and they lasted very well, I took them off * and replaced with new ones when they were 9 years old NOT because they were worn out or perished but because I don't like old tyres, they still had about 5mm of tread left.
I replaced them with the more modern versions about two years ago and so far so good...

The photo's suggest they were - TPMS will only warn of significant deflation - and is another bit of tech forced upon the motoring public by the EU, making it convenient to forego the periodic tyre pressure checks of old. Tyre pressure is lost 'naturally' either by poor seal on the wheel rims or valve seat, but more likely by rubber being porous (in a controlled way) to some of the gases that make up air, AKA osmosis.

We had the continental rep in at Dunton about 15 years ago, and @Wozzaaah is correct, modern tyres have a lot more synthetic polymers in them, virtually no natural rubber in them like the old tyres, but funnily F1 tyres and other race tyres still use up to 10% natural rubber!

Toyos my local garage supply but i've now gone up a tyre size to a proper commercial tyre. As I understand it, a lot of these decisions were due to the EU emissions mandates, compounded by accounting risk management overruling engineering design.
Chain-timed engines are not within a tight enough closed feedback loop for camshaft dephasing to limit the emissions without a lot of post-combustion treatment - which is why M-B for example, use two NOx sensors, soot sensors and close coupled catalyst & particulate filters (on both diesel & petrol fuelled vehicles with chains) with DEF on diesels - and still struggle. VWG use belts and a single NOx sensor, the only real problems they have is with some low-pressure EGR, and even then, only on long return pipe runs allowing condensation to kill the valve & filter. (yes, there's been historic issues with EGR cooler blockage and Audi's implementation of SCR causing the EGR cooler to block - but both of those are engineering issues, not accounting pressure). Ford have gone down the minimal aftertreatment route - but the servicing regime is too rigid for most engine applications - i.e. typical white van man.

Interesting to note – got a car here with 2017 Kumho on the back (rotated from the front) and 2019 Hankook on the front. Hankooks have perished badly in a very similar way.
I’ve got Hankooks from 2008 on another vehicle which has been parked up outside in full sun and they are still good.

Mind you if it was an old car it would be needing the top end taking apart and decoking by now.

It is not always the economy cheap makes either. I am sure dated tyres will come on the MOT in the end - I am sure of it....

The NEDC (New European Driver Cycle) was one of the big pushes, and euro 6 emissions, if we could come up with any engine improvement that would net a 1% improvement in NEDC we would get 1m development funding from management
Euro 6 drove the need to High pressure and low pressure EGR combined with Wet Catalyst all the time squeezing more power out of smaller engines increasing the thermal destiny.
And people wonder why their engine light comes on!!
AS for MB not sure if it ever made it past the concept stage, but they designed an engine with variable compression via a hinge in between the cylinders and the crankshaft! it was a take on the Saab engine.
