The rust is back 11 years later.

I replaced the lower rear wing section 11 years ago but lately its started to bubble through again.

Here we go......

Then a bit more cutting as the rot was as expected, more extensive.

Lucky I have a pair of these inner sections salvaged from when I did the last repair in 2014. I've ordered an arch repair panel, hopefully will be here in a couple of days.

11 years. Not too bad, especially for that area that gets smashed with stones. Did you use any rust treatment in the cavities? Also did you spray it your self?

Yeah rust just sucks doesn't it. You can't really stop it - just slow it down

Classics I restored 15 - 20 years ago now have minor bubbles coming back again too.

There is access to the cavity from the boot so it was all epoxy'ed up after the welding. And yes, I've resprayed most of this car. The repair I did last time was a section like this.

Does it look like it's rusted from the outside in or inside out this time?

Some of the old XKs I have seen didn't last 11years from new before starting to rust out.

Looks like moisture got in the seam between the out and inner arch just inside the lip on the outside of the body. It was well epoxy'ed up there but moisture got in anyway.

Thinking aloud but epoxy might not be the way to go this time? Some dintrol ML or bilt hamber S50 may creap into the seam and better protect it?

S50 once complete. If you really want to get it to penetrate, put an infrared lamp on it when you do it.

That’s a solid run for a high-risk area, but yeah, rust always finds a way back in. Good shout keeping those inner sections from last time. Hopefully the new panel and some ML or S50 will keep it at bay a bit longer this round.

Might be condensation if the cabin air exit vents are behind the bumper, sometimes the plastic flaps stick shut.

I deleted the flaps and replaced with the tube you can see in the pics as water was getting in through the vent and caused the original corrosion.

Just arrived, I'm sure a competent body guy would just have fabricated a repair panel, but lacking the skills and tools I had to buy the panel. Hope to get back to this tomorrow.

Ten minute job that, whaddya think guys. Repair panel readily available @£85-ish per side. Other side hasn't started to bubble yet. No signs of corrosion at all, it's all on this nearside.

Just smooth it out and underseal it up to the trim and round the wheel arch!
