Also there was a big explosion in Staylibridge, Tameside....Mcr......made the news with 45 gallon drums getting thrown about.....
Horrible when this happens, but highlights why we have things like the Seveso directive and COMAH (Control of Major Acccident Hazards) regulations.
We used explosion modelling software in Process safety engineering to work out how big a radius of effect might occur. It was really quite interesting - our processes and storage at my work aren't too bad, but the blast radius of some of the O&G terminal tanks...
it's called Aloha, part of CAMEO software, all free to use, it's really quite clever. You can overlay toxic releases, flash or jet fires, BLEVEs etc etc in real mapping to see exactly how your facility is going to kill the nearest town, etc.
doodlebug....my Dad called themThat would be a V1 you would hear. No chance of hearing a V2 on its supersonic final trajectory.
Called at Spadeadam years ago in passing, couldn't get near the place for security, armed guards etc. There is a place near here at Spadeadam, where they create explosions deliberatly, to teach and study the effects of a blast. Its quite surprising just how much energy there is in a small explosion. Ive been a few time on courses in years gone by.

We used to run whats called an "Explosion Bulge Tests" on welds in HY80 steel for the Trident Submarines. They did them at Rosyth Shipyard just about under the Forth Bridge.....Weld two plated togther 80mm thick...cut a slit in one side...chill to -10....pop 10lbs of Semtex on the other side and clamp between 2 other peices shaped like a toilet seat....dip it in the Firth on the end of a crane and blow it up....then measure how much the slit had grown...........There would be mud and fish flying all over.........it was starting to demolish the walls of the shipyard....so they decided to do it at sea slung between 2 ships....unfortunately it moved and the blast dented one of the ships. There is a place near here at Spadeadam, where they create explosions deliberatly, to teach and study the effects of a blast. I was on shift when this small turbine decided to finish early for the day.............
I had to measure up the parts that were ejected..............150mm thick cast iron scattered around like confetti
He never worked in that dept again, PTSD.....That lad was lucky to get out
He never worked in that dept again, PTSD.....
Typical management response in the aftermath........why wasn't he wearing his PPE ...................pair of safety glasses and a hard hat wouldn't have stopped some of the chunks I had to catalogue
