these type of sheets when old have a lot of thermal movement and just crack whatever is glooped on top of them....once they lose there compound strength the only choice is to replace for a one hit repair or if you have the money and a strong will to live then think about replacing the lot for insulated steel profile sheeting.Whatever you choose remember working and walking on these old assy sheets is like playing with a loaded gun if your not familar with them so be very carefull

For a quick cost effective fix I would lay a fibreglass roofing system over the top of it, we've done a few problem roofs, valleys, gullies etc with it now and it's a good permanent fix - well 30+ year life anyhow.

the sheets are not a stable enough product with regards to thermal movement (expanding and shrinking) and would just crack on the head laps mate using F/G...any coating on top of roofing sheets be it assy or steel must have an elastromeric property and be able to stretch each day and shrink each night with out forming a raised ridge on each joint and with age then cracking..F/G on a "fixed" substrate board like OSB or plywood then no problem for a long term fix

Fibreglass also has high thermal movement and I'm not sure it would bond itself to the sheet solidly enough to give too much trouble.

Sounds like Delta is talking about using profiled fibreglass sheets laid over the top of the asbestos cement ones and not necessarily bonded to them, whereas roofman is talking about unsing an insitu fibreglass and resin roofing system that would be bonded to the old roof sheets.

Some years ago I used fibreglass over a ply built, 18foot river cruiser hull. It gave no problem while I had it.

Sold it on and never received any complaints. I am sure the new owner would have shared any future problems with me. He was an awkward customer.

It was standard practice to skin old hulls like this.

It was a requirement that the hull had to be thoroughly dried out. Ahh the summers of my youth.

I would have thought movement of the hull would have been as great as that on a roof?

my company recently completed a re-roof of a 2000m2 skate park in norwich. the old asbestos was stripped off with and replaced with an insulated metal composite panel, this is the best option though it came with a £100k price tag.
have seen asb roofs painted with grp but it has to be done in summer time as the sheets have to be dry, it is a nasty option for future as if the roof leaks and needs stripping then it is a hell of a job lifting old sheets off as they will all be stuck together
there is no reason that you should'nt do repair your self but be aware cutting or drilling is a no no. sheets are extremely dangerous to walk on.
there are companies out there that spray a rubberised coating over the whole roof though from what i have seen will probably give you another 10 years despite the claims of 20 years.
beware if you start grinding the hook bolts off from the top to replace with new then you will need to access from underneath to get new bolt in, it is possible to cut old bolts off and install a self drilling screw through the old hole and drill into purlins but it aint easy.
we have in the past had leaks on asb roofs which have a low roof pitch of 10deg or less where the corrugations get filled up with moss (there is a double six asb sheet which seagulls are rather fond of building nests in the corrugations) so when it rains the water builds up behind and backs up to the laps.
old asb does crack and leak so maybe worth checking
be very careful if you do decide to access the roof though-crawling boards and running lines with harnesses recommended

So long as the purlins are made of either steel or timber. There was a portal frame building manufacturer local to me called Crendon. Everything was made fro pre-stressed concrete beams including the purlins.

I've just re-roofed a large area of these because of wind damage, replacing the purlins with 2x9 joists as the "J" on the hook bolts available are too tight to fit over the lip on the concrete, also a lot of the concrete purlins were damaged.
