I don't mind doing a lot of things not strictly by the book but I wouldn't fancy bodging a steering arm that's supposed to collapse in an accident and it didn't having run up the back of a couple of cars at speed and im still here make it solid if your not too botheredThere are some things best left alone
Didn't some of the fords come with a triangular shaft arrangement instead of the spline? could it be easier to swap one in ?

I think that's the part, look at the shaft it's triangular rather than splined, is that it ?
Can you not just nip to pic ups and get a second hand one ?
Bearing in mind I've had a couple of glasses of wine but the application that your using it determines the fix. If its used in its standard application then it needs to be factory.If its used in a classic or hot rod then if its better than the old cars column but not as good as the new cars column but still safe then thats ok.If fitted to such an old car then welding (in my mind) would be ok, however I would try something like loctite.
