The End of Halfords tools?

It may just be a stocking issue?
I am one week in No reply to emails, on line chat and face book posts answered but always you need to talk to X when I contact X its Y who will deal with it, Currently Y doesn't answer Emails but tells X they have Emailed me?

ok well in my local halfords the guy behind the counter just took one out of a set and swapped in there and then think that was a 11mm but same principle so reckon someone is dragging there feet

All the talk of breaker bars, i sold my ½" ones years ago and switched to ¾" bars with adapters. While i never broke a ½" bar, i hated the "ping" they sent through your fingers on tight stuff that breaks loose suddenly.

Never actually broken many tools, a handful of sockets and one Snap-on long ring spanner i put a 5' scaffold pole on. Always wonder how some people break so much stuff..

Never used those, but i have a set of Facom open-end ratchet spanners. They're very useful at times. Hydraulic work is a world of its own in awkwardness, and needing 9 different tools to undo a single fitting.

I abuse the halfords ratchet spanners terribly, and when they play up an overnight soaking in a pot of thin oil sorts them out nicely.
Rate them better than the snap on ones, purely as the snap on ones had the little change over lever, early snap on ratchet spanners were chunky monkeys and much stronger than the newer fine tooth ratchet affairs.

I think Halfords, Gearwrench, Husky, Stanley and a few others come out the same factory in Taiwan/China with the relevant name bashed in . . .

All of mine have been pretty good - got a mix of Halford, Gearwrench and Husky. The ones with the changeover lever (and a lip in the ratchet "socket" that stops it sliding off the nut/bolt head - very useful) are sometimes irritating as I always seem to knock it without noticing while speedily ratcheting - so I end up undoing the previous few moments ratchet work in the opposite direction

Heard 2 long term users of snap on complaining today of how crap snap on now is. They were talking about welders, chargers, torque wrenches and drills and how much they'd spent and snap on being no help. Drills lasting as short as a year.

And that’s why I buy a lot of secondhand tools. In fact I bagged an odd mix of 4 King Dick spanners off the bay which arrived today. A 24/19mm, 13/17mm, 10/8mm and a 5.5/8mm, all open end in good condition. 9 quid including postage.

I know that King Dick are mostly still British made and their HQ is a few miles down the road from me. Tempted to order a few bits to see what they’re like TBH.

As for the various tool vans that come round by me, well it’s a load of overpriced mediocrity. MAC, Snapon, even that cheap van who stocks all sorts are not interesting any more. What I will say is that the brands do have specialist tools for specific jobs which can come in handy, but if it’s for a one off job such as a cambelt locking tool I always go cheap. A pro mechanic would probably do otherwise.

All Snap On cordless stuff is pretty poor, overtaken by Milwaukee in the mechs game, better warranty, longer service life, 1/3rd the price!

After about 28 years my snap on ratchet screwdriver has started slipping, bearing in mind this has been in pretty much contant use until about 8 years ago when I bought a new one for work and this became my home screwdriver.No probs about £50 new on ebay, no, now up to £70.Now I wouldn't mind £50 but £70 is a bit much for at home.I bought a williams screwdriver from amazon from america £35 delivered, now I knew that williams makes the snap on ones, this one is pretty much the same, no knurling on the shaft and a slightly different handle but the ratchet feels the same and at half the price of snap on. I do like snap on and own loads but the prices do need to be realistic which although expensive before, I think way overpriced now.

The problem is I never see a snap on rep anymore.I've got a normal screwdriver and a screwdriver ended socket to get replaced under warranty but snap on uk just gave me the number of a local rep.Last time I saw one was 10 years ago.Handy to know you can get a kit, I won't bin it now.

Whereabouts are you? A good mate of mine is a Snap-on dealer.

Send me the part numbers of the tools and i'll ask him to see if replacements are in stock. He'd warranty them if i ask.
