which brings me onto a big massive bit of plate ive got. Must be about 10mm thick and about A3 in size. Chap I got it from said it’s gauge plate. Now I know what it is

I was told gauge plate is typically a2 or o1 toolsteel


Plus it's cheaper when it's gauge plate, as soon as it become knife making 01 well you know the rest

Also called ground flat stock. I have a big slab 3/4" x 300x360, to make a milling fixture from, but I havent worked out the best way to cut it up.

Going from 10mm down to 4mm is going to be painfull

@Parm, my good man. I have a few 600mm+ Wood blades I have stashed for the making of such tooth picks. Would you like me to slice you a bit off. Thickest blade is 5mm

I bought a 1m diameter ex-diamond edged road saw blade from the scrappie to cut up to make a machete.
Cut it, and it delaminated.
Apparently, they're made of 3 sheets of 2mm(ish) plate - spot welded together.

Not suggesting the woodblades are: but something for anyone else to bear in mind if they come across one.

I was offered some of those, they are so scored from debris. I declined, still goo to know.

I use a homemade filing jig:

The threaded eye controls the bevel angle and the bolt takes care of the plunge line. My one is metal and badly welded. I have seen wooden versions or you could even screw it down to a bench.

Ive made something like that a few years ago, will see if i can find some pictures. Will it do the fancy curve shape i want ?

Lol, thats still where it was in that picture. Sort of lost interest in that project
